illegal to charge people to hunt?
« on: June 24, 2014, 10:00:45 PM »
So i'm pretty lucky here on the westside over here and have some really good waterfowl and goose hunting areas my family owns. I was wondering if it's illegal to just take some guys hunting and charge them. I have days where i could use a few more guys to get some more birds and if i could get some money to buy more decoys or what not i think it would be pretty good deal for both parties. So is this illegal or would i have to purchase some guide business stuff?

Washington does not have hunting guide licensing, however, if you are running a business you should have a business license and to protect all parties you should have liability insurance. Additionally, it's a federal violation to operate on federal lands and a state violation to operate on WDFW lands without a special-use permit.

FYI - H-W does not have any sponsors who are active waterfowl guides, I would like to see a couple good waterfowl guides advertise on the forum to accommodate hunters looking for a waterfowl guide. It's only $50 yearly to be a sponsor.

You can sell leases on your own property without a business license unless the income exceeds $12K/yr.

If your just looking for some decoy money I would just have the hunter show up with some new decoys of your choice as a gift to you for some hunting access.

:yeah:

WA's hunting guide industry is realistically the last unregulated fishing/hunting industry left in the state, at least unregulated by WDFW. WA is definitely on the short list, especially in the west that doesn't regulate hunting guides. Although I do think there will be changes in the next decade or so, the legislature has been starting to really set some requirements for fishing guides and I can see them moving to the hunting side soon  :twocents:

The industry is asking for regulation, there have been complaints made to the AG's office due to unscrupulous operators recently, and its been brought up during the Parks & Recreation Task Force meetings.
