Unit 454 Issaquaw
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:28:40 PM »
Does anyone know about the Hancock tree farm off 410 highway. I heard they would be doing logging in there but, when I called Hancock they couldn't give me any information. I don't want to spend $$
For the permit only to find they are logging in there. I was there last year and there was no logging. Any information can help.  Thanks.

There wasn't any logging last year in there because of the pending sale to the muckleshoots but they are logging full bore now. That really isnt a problem unless you have some area scouted and then they move a logging side in around hunting season. Get a cb radio and drive slow and safe and stay away from those areas for your safety and that of the loggers too....no problem.....Les

I would not suggest buying the permit since the Muckleshoot bought it.  I live in Enumclaw and will likely not hunt that area anymore.

Muckleshoot hunting seasons all open well before our seasons:

I doubt they'll log the mill I can ask some buddies. But even tho the mucks own it they can't shoot anymore then they can find just like any normal hunter, ya they got good long seasons but like stated they can't kill anymore then they can find.  And yes out of the 80/90 thousand acres there is logging going on but still plenty of timber to hunt... We've been very successful te last few years in there so I wouldn't bag on white river Hancock too much, it's no different now with tribal hunting then it has been previous years. But hey less people buying permits that's fine by me

With Muckleshoot getting increased access prior to hunters, this essentially makes bow and muzzle loader season the same as rifle season in most other areas of the state.  The animals are already being hammered, the traffic is heavy, and they are already hunkered down.

I didn't mention the mill, because I doubt it'll be an issue.

Also, you're forgetting a big issue as well - you can designate hunters in Muckleshoot.

All that being said.. Yes I agree that you and I can live a symbiotic relationship.  You keep hunting Hancock and I'll hunt the other local (free) areas that I know the animals are being pushed to.

Sorry, would you elaborate? Are you referring to this:

"Designated Hunters:  Designated hunters are chosen by tribal members, and are automatically approved if they do not have any outstanding fines or other issues with our department. Staff is not responsible for making sure your hunter fills your tags, and you are responsible for any payments in regards to processing your filled tags. I do have a list in my office for people who do not know anyone in the area, and I can add your name, and hope that a hunter comes in and wants to hunt."

Like I said less people the better, I'm not gonna hack on the owners because so far nothing has changed with it. So no one should really tell someone "hey don't buy it" because certain people own it. And what's the big issue with "designating" a hunter I don't get it if you could explain what it is. Either way they still can't kill anymore then they can find if they are such ethical hunters that care soo much about those woods up there and all. But what's the whole designated hunter thing

It's tag sharing. It would be like me giving you my bear tag because you find bears better than I do.

So basically a guy can go up there with 5-10 tags and go cray-cray on a herd.  And yes it has happened.

That's what I figured, and I've seen a few scenarios up there with that in white river and stampede.... It's gonna happen anywhere not just on Hancock land. If a person wants to avoid that stuff basically may aswell hunt alpine wilderness or what not  :twocents:
