Where do you buy your camera bait?
« on: June 29, 2014, 02:43:01 PM »
Hi everyone my name is Robert but I go by Bob. I've been stalking the forums for awhile and admiring everyone's trail pictures. I'm an avid hunter and an active duty member of the US Coast Guard. I grew up near Spokane, WA and chased many a whitetail and turkey.

Now my question is where do you buy your bait for the cameras and what do you use?

If you don't mind saying

If you need to use bait to pictures of wildlife you are placing your cameras and likely hunting in the wrong locations!  Never use bait and get thousands of pictures of all kinds of wildlife a year.

I use free ground fall apples when they are available. :)

Thanks for the replies! I've used apples before and they keep the whitetails coming in. So hopefully I can get ahold of some and use them on these blacktails with the same resukt

I am usually getting pictures of elk and bear on my camera.  It is set up on a heavily used path.  I have put out the molasses/corn blocks and the elk will eat that thing in a few days. It costs about $11/block but doesn't last worth beans.  I have gone to a #50 bag of salt with selenium 90ppm.  It costs about $8 and lasts most of the season.  The animals seem to gather around it and eat it if they need salt.  I have quite a few pictures of big bulls in the past and they don't seem to touch the salt, they just walk by.  The cows will eat it and the bears have rolled in it and pooped in it.  Any feed store will have it.

Greenhorn thanks for the stores and the whole money comparison. And bears aren't what I'm lookin for. Sundance thank you for your thorough response. I agree with your formula, in fact as soon as my foot heals I'll be out scouting the spots that I've been looking at via google earth. But all in all I'm just hoping to see what's in the area when I'm not around. Ideally I'd love to spend all my spare time out scouting but it ain't a perfect world

I'm a smorgasbord kind of guy.

I usually throw out salt/selenium (powder so nobody moves /takes it), wet cob and some of that apple drippy goop to put scent out.

Works for me, but I haven't experimented much.

Using bait will help get more pictures and different angles of the critters. Travel Lane pictures might just be coming and going with heads being down a lot. I prefer to see multiple angles of the animals.

I like salt w selenium.
