Margaret access
« on: July 03, 2014, 08:25:22 PM »
I'm looking for some help! I have been selected for Margaret Bull for the upcoming bow season and I 'am not as familiar with this unit as I am the Winston or Toutle. I have been working in the oil fields of North Dakota and plan on returning home for a quick scouting trip around 7/21. I will be buying a Weyco key  >:( , but not sure of any main gates or main access points to get into the unit. Having only a couple days to scout before returning back to North Dakota any help would be appreciated about the unit in general. Is Kidd Valley Camp Ground a recommended place to camp while hunting the unit? Is there any access points in case the Weyco gates are closed? Thanks in advance!

We drew the rifle tag. We bought the Weyco access permit so I'm just waiting for all the info and the combo or gate key to come in the mail. I don't know much other than hurry up and wait as it's all on them. I've been researching Margaret on here and there's a variety of answers so I'm not going to speculate until my info comes in. Congrats and good luck. If I find out anything I'll keep you posted.

Any luck with the "gate key" or combo?  I'm interested in what you get.  I emailed Weyerhauser and got a pretty beefy pdf map of the St. helens tree farm with roads, permit areas, gmu boundaries, etc.  It was pretty sweet of them to send me it.  PM me if you'd like a copy

Congrats on the permit. We've bowhunted with permits several times over the years (twice in the last 3 years) and have always tagged out. A great place to stay is at ECO Park. Mark Smith is the owner and he and his wife are great hosts. They have a good relationship with the Weyco folks which could come in handy. It's the closest place to stay to where all the action is too. Book now though because spaces are limited. If you PM me I may be able to offer up some area's to check out. Hopefully the weather gods will cooperate and you won't get kicked out due to fire danger. (Weyco land anyway)

Lucky dog I know where a 320" class bull + is but didn't get the tag. Having the antlerless tag last year it was frustrating seeing them walk broadside at 30 yards away. Eco park would be the way to go. And scouting is a big thing to. A rule of thumb for that unit is the lower you go the more elk because of the clear cuts but you get way more people. My 2 cents would be to find "virgin" ground and side hill it 1/3 down the hills and hike for ever. Hiking 10 miles a day is a must. Btw I would recommend a side arm due to the increase of cougars in there I found some tracks about the size of my hand in fresh snow where I was hunting ;( and there's a sh*t ton of rabbits and grouse up there so bringing a few judo zwicky heads would be nice.
