official thoughts on my buck
« on: December 03, 2008, 05:09:27 PM »
Not sure how an official measurer would score this G3.  Any thoughts.  Its a dropper but yet obvious that it started out normal and was damaged and comes off the beam in the right spot.  Would it be considered an abnormal point or would it count as the g3 :dunno:

I can get some closer up views if you need them.  I haven't taken any other shots yet.

Looks like a typical G4 that was damaged while growing, rather than an abnormal point.  Be interested to see what the club says.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Kind of what I was thinking.  Sure a big difference in score depending on what they come up with.  I can get some closeups if needed.  Its obviously that point, just not sure how the official boys count it.  I'd ask my official scorer, but I bet he is chasing whitetails in the Dakotas.

thats pretty crazy lookin. its hard to say what they would count it as cus it started out as a normal point but was obviously damage and is now a dropper but who know. would love to see what they would call that.

My initial thoughts is non typical (abnormal), but Jack Reneau- Director of Big Game Records with Boone and Crockett writes "I can’t tell from the photo.  However, if it comes directly off the top of the main beam and folds over, it could still be a normal point.  It looks like it was damaged early in velvet.  I’ve seen these points before on whitetails and mule deer." If you have more photos we could further pursue this issue, your choice. Let me know if you need further assistance.

I'll take a couple tonight and we'll re visit it.  It started off normal and then damaged.  I'll get some close ups.  Stay tuned.  Thank you.

Just think of it this way Doug, you have a more rare deer than most, its a typical droptine  :)

This is clearly a broken "normal" point.  Measurement would be taken from the normal baseline, but on the inside of the mainbeam, up and over the break, then down to the tip, following the centerline.  Typically, points are measured on their "outer curve" but in this case, you'd have to measure it on what would have been it's normal inside.

I would definitely get a second opinion on this from the Records Office if I were scoring it.

Great buck Doug!
