Elk Game Plan - Episode 1
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:28:07 AM »
9:30 PM, 23 September, 2014 (obviously not in WA.. let's say, you're in Idaho). Up until this point in your hunt, you've been hunting your normal spots but decide to branch out a bit and do some locating about ten miles from your normal camp/hunt area. OK, you park on a turnout on a raggedy, steep side hill road and sit quietly, listening out the window into a deep draw for 15 minutes. After hearing nothing but the wind lightly blowing through the trees overhead for those 15 minutes, you quietly step out of your truck and walk up the road 100 yards and throw a nice, three note locator bugle down the side hill into the large draw. After 10 or 15 seconds, you hear a response probably 1/4 mile down the draw to the right. You have a vocal bull to hunt in the morning if you choose to. No established trail systems here, pretty dang steep, and the terrain is a mix of somewhat open bear grassy meadows and timber stands. Last piece of information; you're not very familiar with this area but possess a 7.5 minute quad map that covers it. What will your planning process consist of for tonight, and, how do you think you may attack this bull in the morning?

It may be another hunter, because it took quite awhile to get a response. I have been told that a bull will respond almost immediately (if he does) to your locate bugle.  10-15 seconds is about the time it may take another hunter to get his bugle out to respond to what he thinks is a bull. I'd take a drive around to see if there are any other trucks or hunters around first. If not, I'd be there a couple hours before light in the morning and just listen. Hopefully I can hear him and go from there. But then again I'm new at this and haven't even shot at an elk before, so my thinking here may be totally off and that's why I haven't shot at an elk yet.    :yike:  Waiting anxiously for critiques about my thinking.  :chuckle:

Nl. Racks, it sometimes takes a bull more than 10 minutes to respond once, even after a handfull of locators have been thrown at him; they are on their own clock sometimes.  Nope, this is a bull and there are no hunters down over the bank at 9:30 PM for this scenario.

Woops...ignored the time.  :bash:  :( Maybe I should stick to whitetails.  Oh well it's a fun time anyways to be out hunting.

I'm going after him. I would be back in there about 2 hours before light. I would listen for the first hour to see if he sounds off on his own. If he sounds off, I try to pin point he location with out calling making it a total stock and move if needed. An hour before shooting light I might try starting in given the terrain and moon light.
If he doesn't sound off or shuts down after only bugling once. About an hour before light I'd try locating him and make moves according to him. Given the terrain and light 30 min. before light I'm moving my way in and closing the distance as much as possible. If he is staying vocal I'd try to sneak as much possible without calling to not give up my location. It all depends on him, if he is aggressive I'll set up to call him in. With any luck  :mgun2:

I had a bull answer 20 min after doing locator bugles one every 5 min...elk can be unpredictable  also  try different tones to your bugle...they may not answer one tone but will another

I'd be there in the am to hunt him.  Probably wait on the ridge/road for a bit, but likely to move down at least 200 yards/half way to his last elevation while listening. I want to hunt him on the same elevation he is at first light, expecting that the early morning downhill thermals will change to uphill thermals as the day warms. But if we are on a north slope or otherwise have slow-developing thermals, I'll want to be slightly below to take advantage of the wind/thermals. If I have a buddy and we haven't heard him in the am, I'd place us each on opposite sides of where we think he is.
