Hunting Mentors - take a kid hunting!
«

Have you mentored kids for hunting? How did it go?
Do you have any stories to share?
What are the biggest challenges you face when mentoring?
Have you been asked to take a kid hunting but were unsure?
Would you like someone to mentor your kid, but don't know how to find someone to do so?
Ask questions and share stories

I did the WDFW mentorship thing with my buddy's kid in 2009. His dad was in Iraq till right before deer season and they didn't get the kid into hunter's ed in time so we did the mentorship program. He killed his 1st buck on opening day 2009.
Kyle has had continued success since then with 1 other nice mule deer buck and his first whitetail last year.
I enjoy taking the kids hunting. Happy to report Kyle's little brother will be joining us this year as well.

You guys all know about Braxton. We're approaching 3 years shooting and he's close to ready for taking his Hunter's Education class. I think he'll probably take it this Fall or Winter. He's got some learning/growing challenges that have necessitated waiting.
I don't experience any downfalls with this. He's really grown up over the last three years and we both enjoy our time shooting and the car trips back and forth. The only thing I suggest is that you make sure you're going to be around for him for a long time. In Braxton's case, dad doesn't hunt or shoot, so he depends on me to teach his son what he needs to know. Braxton depends on me to be there for him every week, no fail, and some weekends. I'm not sure how much he'll be able to hunt with me because I bowhunt and he struggles in school, but I'm sure we'll figure something out.

My cousin has been hunting for four years and last year was his first deer. I grew up hunting with a muzzle loader and that's what they started him on. Last year I took the time to take him and my uncle on a rifle hunt opening weekend of deer season. This was also my uncles first hunt. I got to personally guide both of them which was a cool experience. Both were successful. All in all we had a great weekend. My cousins was a buck to never forget. I will remember it til the day I die or go senile whichever comes first!

My son has been blessed by a great guy that has invited him to hunt with him the last year or so. And today, my son shot his first pheasant during the youth hunting weekend. He was so thrilled. So thankful for men, like Huntingfool7 who are willing to share their time, insight, experience and the joy of hunting with our children.
Check out a couple pics:
