range finder question

I have been hunting Archery hunting for about 25 years and have never hunted with a range finder. Just curious how many of you use one? If not why don't you use one. I have seen them and messed with a buddies of mine but never felt the need to get one. In my opinion its just one more item to lug around in the woods. I have shot deer, elk , turkey, pigs, rabbits, and such. I haven't had a problem judging yardage and for me personally I like to keep my shots under 40 yards. I do understand wanting pinpoint accuracy and yardage plays a huge role in that. Like I said just wondering how many use them or don't.

What happens when the deer you think is 38 yards is really 48 yards away?

Well, if it works for you then groovy. I like to take all the variables out of the equation that involve the unknown. If I have a second to range the animal that is one less thing that is unknown. When in the stand I will pre range trees and what not many times to keep me fresh on my distances. As technology advances many do, and are able effectivly, take longer shots. To be accurate at longer ranges one needs to know exact yardage as best they can. Angle compensation is another aspect. I use them and keep it within reach at all times when bow/rifle hunting.

I do agree that the longer shots are much more prone to yardage error and less forgiving

For me .... I have more trouble in low light conditions. I.e. dusk .  That's where it helps  me.

its hard enough to get within in range i would rather not chance it i use a range finder. My hunting partner thought he could range animals well lets just say my freezer was full and his was not.
