300 WSM Reload Q:
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:21:59 PM »
tinkering with thoughts on a lighter load for my 300 wsm. i want to reduce the felt recoil abit for deer sized game. been shooting 180's but don't like them. the rifle is customized abit and very light, and has a 24" bbl. i'm thinking of a 150 or 165 accubond, i also want to slow it down to to 3000 fps. everyone wants warp speed, but i just like 3000 fps for some reason. anybody else out there going light "AND" slowing down that 300wsm?

Reducing your bullet weight to 150 should do a good job reducing your recoil.  Hell with a good bullet like an accubond, a 150 going 3000 will kill the crap out of anything you want to hunt.  I'd probably just develop 1 load for everything.  Buddy of mine shoots 150 TSX out of his for everything.  He's killed a ton of plain's game in Africa with it too.

I have a T3 300 wsm and I went to the 150 core-lokt, I found that they work great out of my gun.  I've hit targets at 450  :hunt2:

After seeing what my 30-06 did to my elk with a 150 interlock @ 3000fps, Spur_Ride slowed his 300wby to 3000fps and uses a 150 nosler partition. It did a great job on his big Muley this year. and is shoulder friendly!

If I wanted slower then I would go back to my .308 or 30-06.  Ballistics are Ballistics regardless of what gun they are shot out of.  Personally I love my daughters 165's at 3400 out of a 22" barrel.

My 300 wsm is shooting 180's at 3300 and dosent hurt a bit. It's a Browning BLR lightweight stainless and has the factory pad. I think you just need a better pad on the stock.

If I want slower I pick up the BAR in 06.

3300fps with a 180gr bulletfrom a 300wsm?  WOW, that is smoking fast for the 300wsm, I haven't seen any load data anywhere that will produce that kind of speed with that gr bullet for a 300wsm.  I'd be thrilled to hear what your loads are so that I could load up something like that for my buddies 300wsm.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Yes, 3300 is a quite fast for 180 grain out of WSM.  These sound like numbers from a 300 RUM or 30 - 378 Weatherby Mag.

JoshT comments would be accurate in my opinion

Hogdon (which includes IMR and Win.) doesn't list a single load for a 24" barreled .300 WSM breaking 3000 with a 180. Nosler lists a couple loads that'll go a shade over 3000. Alliant, Vit, and Ramshot are in the 3k neighborhood too.

I can get 3300+ out of a 180 in the RUM... but it takes 90-100 grains of powder. For the record here... most .300 RUM loads list a 180 in the 3200 range! It takes 100 grains of Retumbo and a 26" barrel to get 3350 out of my rifle.

The commonly accepted formula is this:

Velocity in creases at a rate of 1/4th the increase in capacity.

Soooo, to get an additional 10% in the velocity department (3000 up to 3300)... you'd need about 40% more capacity (like the RUM case)... or a coresponding increase in pressure. For the record... that would be about 91,000 PSI in the WSM case (65000 + 40%). I don't want to be next to you on the range when your touching those off.

I am slow and heavy....200gr at 2600 is accurate and deadly in western WA elk ranges.
I would consider lighter bullets and not worry about the diff btw 2700 and 3k.
I have not experimented but would think it's fun.
I'd go lighter than 150gr unless the target weighed more than 150lb.

I may be a bit off.  :dunno: Im going off memory and after being hit with as many bolts as I have in the head you can understand why. Ill check the data again tonight.
