Are You Always The Caller?

 So how about that thought? Do you hunt with a group of guys where most are very limited in their calling abilities so you are the "designated caller". That's great you are well rounded enough & put in practice throughout the year so you can help yourself & members in your hunting party but wouldn't it be nice if the other hunters had the same type of dedication that you do so you too can have equal "shooter" opportunities! I see this every year in the Elkwoods & read this very thought throughout the internet hunting sites. Who here feels they wished their hunting partners took their elk hunting/calling more serious?

  Because others are not as serious as you is this a reason many are now solo hunters?

Yeah I total can relate.  It would be nice to not have to worry about that aspect of the hunt but then again calling is what makes elk season so special.   Yes I would love for one of my hunting partners to learn to call for me.

o yeah !! that is me , i have been the caller for the last 4 years my other two hunting partners will not practice and or even try to get better. i call all year making all different notes and tone levels of sound. i watch videos spend time with the elk all year long to learn to mimic there sound to the t. i practice so much that my 5 year old daughter is a bugling fool and is now learning a diaphragm call. she is my up and comer. i would like a caller other than my self in are group. don't get me wrong i love the thrill , just would like a chance to.

Great topic Elknut, I also have had this same experience with past hunting partners, with me being the only one who can call. Untill this year, my wife learned to call and we watched your DVDs. they helped a lot with learning the meaning of different calls, and when to use them. she called in bulls for me like a seasoned elk calling champion.By the end of the season she had bloody knuckles from raking trees and sore gums from reeds in her mouth. but even though she wasn't the shooter this time she had the best experience of her life out in the elk woods. I had some bulls so close that I could have spit on them. I like hunting solo, but prefer to have a huntin buddy even if they cant call in elk for me too.

Its been like this since I started elk hunting 8 years....my last hunting partner could use a reed and make the sounds but couldn't call elk....I got your CDs and it helped me tremendously...I even gave him the CDs to listen to so he could learn and I don't think they came out of the case....I took another friend out this year for rifle and he's already talking about bow hunting with me and wanting to learn to call so I may have finally got someone to call for me for once  don't get me wrong I absolutly love to call and help others get their animals but it would be nice to have someone do It for me...I put the time money and effort in with scouting and equipment  and will be nice to finally have some help...this is his second year with me and he's turning into a huntin fool....I mention the woods and he's in the passenger seat with his coffee, binos, and gun ready to go

My cousin and his hunting partner take turns calling, one will call in the morning or the whole day, then the other will call in the evening or the next day.  No way would I want to be the caller all the time, that is simply not fair.  Your hunting partner out of respect, needs to learn how to call.  I would stay solo if my partner didn't call.

Nailed it Paul. I've been hunting solo lately for that very reason. I call and shoot for myself. Tired of friends pulling bull tags in good units and then asking me to call for them. It'd be nice if they'd take some initiative to learn how to communicate with elk.

That being said, when's the calling contest?

I hear you guys! Why is it so tough for members of our groups not to practice their calling? You'd think that with the time, effort & monies it takes they'd be more passionate about it but every year there are those ones that seem to depend on others around them. At times this can harbor into hard feelings, hopefully most do not experience that but it does happen. Maybe it's because we hardly ever say anything to these guys so they continue on their regular habits & just expect to always be the shooter. Heck, after I think about it they have it pretty good! (grin)

I'm lucky at the moment and my dad doesn't hunt archery elk so he calls for me all season. But when I do hunt with another archery hunter I will expect them to learn how to call. Even though my dad does all my calling I still learned how to call and still learning every year. My wife doesn't like it to much when I'm practicing in the house in off season...  . I have a buddy who is probably going to hunt with us next season if they change the season dates hopefully to be later. I told him he better buy some calls and start practicing or he will be on his own. It definitely is unfair and disrespectful in my opinion to have a hunting partner who does not learn how to call.
