Any Ideas?
« on: December 08, 2008, 09:06:13 PM »
Wanted to see if anyone has any ideas.  I have been watching a tree line along a farmer's field almost every night since late archery opened.  The farmer has told me he has seen a couple of 3 points and a 4 point.  So far I have seen a few different does and a 2 pt. I actually passed on in the early season. I see a deer almost every night, all within 25 yards.  Problem is they all have come out about 10 minutes after legal shooting.  I stay until it is fairly dark and crawl out so I don't spook them out.(Same thing happened during elk season, had 15 cows and three bulls within 30 yards a few times but too dark)  So far they have not responded to any calls or rattling, that could mean I suck at calling. I put some scent pads up last week and one of the bucks tore up the trees and scraped up the spot I was sitting in.  I am worried that if I try to go into the brush after them I will just kick them out of the area.  Any ideas for pulling them out earlier?  Will they come out earlier if starts to get colder?

its one of those luck of the draw things, sounds like you are doing everything right but the timing of them coming out sucks, it would just be a matter of time or a change in weather that might bring them out a few minutes earlier to feed. good luck :twocents:

Hopefully the weather will do the trick.

We are expecting a series of systems to roll through the region Friday night, Saturday, and again on Tuesday bringing much colder temps, snow, and rain to the area. That might do the trick! (I know, I'm a geek. I am a meteorologist/oceanographer for the Navy...or more fondly refered to as a "weather guesser")

In case it helps, it looks like snow or a rain/snow mix for much of the Puget Sound area and a good shot of snow in the mountains. Tuesday's system doesn't look like it will bring in the colder temps that this weekend's will but it is still a turn in the right direction.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

if you have a tree stand you can locate the animals trails into the fields and set up back in the woods aways.
get in early and plan on sitting for a few hours. you maybe able to catch the animals moving thru the woods during hours of shooting light on their way to the fields.
just a thought.. not sure what the area looks like or anything. :dunno:
if you do that make sure the wind is in your favor for doing a set up like that.

I agree with backyard bucks re: setting up farther back from the field, but if that's not working I'd go in after 'em. If you are conscious about scent and wind direction and take your time it can work out and I think it will be very rewarding. I always feel good when I can sneak into their bedroom without busting them out. Even if it doesn't work, you will learn something.

thanks for the ideas.  I watched a button buck eat apples for about half an hour tonight.  He came out earlier tonight than the other night so maybe the weather change is getting them moving sooner.  Fingers crossed for one of the bigger boys to come out
