2014 Bear Packlist
«
on:

Below is my pack list for my upcoming hunt. The total weight at the top is without water, I will probably carry between 100-120ounces of water in but there will be a source nearby so I might only take the 70oz bladder full and fill the other ones. I'm going to be wearing my kuiu attack pants and merino top in but if it gets to hot I'll throw on the shorts and kuiu tshirt. I'm taking an extra pair of socks and underwear so I can let one dry out during the day. The first and last day of food are lighter because I'm going in, in the afternoon and coming out the last day mid day.

thats a solid list.
if youre looking for input a couple easy things. if not, disregard.
AA lithium, more expensive but last much longer. 3 lith AA's is only 1.5oz but honestly you dont even need spares for a short trip.
august, i like shorts and rain pants, i think it gives you more options. also consider gaiters, even if theyre short ones. i dont know many people that start hunting in gaiters, that go away from it.
with your EE quilt, you can get away with just an e-vent drysack, no compression needed and save about an oz.
some pretty dang good gps apps for the iphone, i bet silk will chime in, really no need for the garmin with them..
i found .4oz of TP sufficient per day. heavy duty stuff too. a whole roll of charmin quilted is only like 2.6oz with roll removed...
thats about 1.5lb saved.
pretty tight list!
do you have gloves or more importantly a stocking hat?

I'll have to try to get more accurate weights on the small stuff because my scale isn't very accurate, I'm taking a half of roll of tp so I can bump that down. I'll have to check to see what battieres I have. I plan on putting fresh ones in the night before. Just want to have an extra set for the gps and light incase we get something at dusk so I'm not stuck in the dark gutting and packing a bear.
I've tried a couple of the apps for the iphone but I just can't seem to put away the garmin. I love it. Taking the phone to turn on for pictures mostly.
I might have to test my shorts and gaiters this weekend, I only have or crocs so I don't know if their be too loud of chaff my legs up.
Thanks for the advice, did a lot of research to try and get the right gear first. The quilt has changed my life in terms of backcountry camping.

Why the Orange vest? Not required until October. Your list looks pretty solid. Good luck.

I'm going too throw my kuiu beanie in there since it's less than an ounce if it gets cold up there. I have some gloves but don't see the need with the weather being so hot? I didn't want to waste some weight on them.
The orange vest it to wrap around the pack when I'm packing out. I simply just don't trust someone not to mistake me fore a bear. I've meant some weirdos hunting last year that just made me nervous. One guy thought I was a deer walking down the road in full orange

I can't hunt without gloves. Just can't do it. Don't care how hot it is, etc. They only weigh a tiny bit. Not nearly enough to worry about. Thorns, rocks, etc. Get some mechanix gloves or something.

the first few hours can be very cold while glassing. espec if your ridge is windy. and being a quilt user, if that temps drops, you may want that hat. last year on an aug bear hunt it went from a solid 75 during the day to like 35 that night.
crocs may or may not work for you. for me i like short gaiters til around oct.
i run 10k degrees according to those that have spent time in the backcountry with me though.
silk wheres tall gaiters year round with no complaints..

I love the topo maps by Phil Endicott for my iphone. It's seriously amazing and worth the 7 bucks and super accurate.
I also an a huge KUIU fan but got sold big time on the valhallas from Kryptek...
I also run KUIU gaiters with them and don't whine about the heat like some people...
I can't hunt with gloves, I hate them, but to each there own!

Yup just search "topo maps" and it should be the first one that pulls up.
