Pass thru's

When hunting elk, or deer, how likely is a pass thru shot? Lets say as a scenario you are shooting a 65lb bow at 280 fps and a 410gr arrow. slightly quartering to, it goes thru the shoulder and into the cavity. What is the likelihood of a pass thru? There are a TON of variables, but just trying to get an idea of what happens with the shot. I have never personally shot one of these critters with a bow so I dont know.

I had a complete pass-through on a bull at 25 yards, slightly quartering away.  He made it 20 yards and I never did find the arrow.  There was a pretty steep drop off on the other side of the bull and the only thing I can think of is that the arrow just kept going and going.  I pull a 64lb or so bow.

In my experience and from what i have seen with guys i have hunted with on deer that a pass through is very likely and i would say has happened more times than not with me.
Years ago when i used aluminum arrows i had a few that would pass through and be bent or even broken in half, i figured the broken ones were from the deer jumping as the arrow was passing through.

Elk is still a dream for me with a bow...

Pass throughs are the usual for me and my hunting partners. The only time we haven't had it go through on elk was when the front shoulder was hit. They have big bones. We all shoot Muzzy and G5 montec.

I have shot one elk with a bow.  Quartering away.  I hit a bit of guts, liver, and lungs.  Elk made it about 50 yards.  My arrow stopped against the offside hide exactly like bullets do.

I would say as long as no major bone is hit the arrow will pass thru. My 470gr arrow at 290fps smoked out the back side of my deer and buried its self up to the fletch in the hill behind him.

I had a pass through on one of the two elk and the only deer I have arrowed.  Both pass throughs were double lung shots.  In the case of the elk it went between ribs on both the entry and exit wound and the arrow went another 40 yards past the animal before hitting the ground.  I pull 60 lbs.

The non-pass through was on the bull in my avatar.  It hit low in the rib cage and didn't have an exit wound.  I didn't pay any attention to what it hit in terms of bone but I have to think it tangled with ribs.  That shot was with a slower speed 60 lb. bow.

I HAD A PASS THROUGH ON LAST YEARS ELK. QUARTERING WAY. THE ARROW BROKE IN HALF INSIDE AND STILL PASSED THROUGH. THAT WAS WITH SLICK TRICK 100 GRAIN.

I'm relatively new to hunting with a 55# recurve(only bow Ive ever owned) and was wondering what kind of broadheads you prefer?

I have shot more elk than I dare to count. Almost all have been pass thru's. I shoot 70Lbs at 30.5" and a 500 gr arrow tipped with Shuttle t Broadheads. The common denominator I believe is a heavy arrow. I have shot them from 6' to 80 yds.Most do not go more than 20-30 yds. Some do not take a step. Proper arrrow placement, heavy arrow and a very sharp broadhead. I sharpen every broadhead I put in my quiver.

I agree with come get some.  I shot my bull at 60 quartering away, got clean pass through and I shoot a heavier arrow.  To be honest over the years I have seen quite a few animals shot with fast bows and light arrows not get pass through.  They will be buried to the fletch and then the animal busts the arrow up as it runs off.

Always had full pass through on elk.  Last one was at 5 yds and embedded in tree.
My first elk was at 35 yds, slick trick full pass through. 65#28" old single cam 420 gr total weight.

It is possible to get a psss thru even at 45 lbs. I have a friend and his wife who hunt Idawho. She has gotten pass thru's on double lung shots on large bulls. What we are saying is the probability of a pass thru is much higher with a heavier arrow that carries more down range kenetic energy. With the right placement you can probably kill one with just about any combination. You can never count on the animal cooperating, standing still or being relaxed. A heavier arrow is insurance for just such an occasion.

Most of my elk have been pass through shots.
Older compound, heavy arrows.  Longest 45 yds.
One in avatar was not a pass through at 18 yds.

every deer has been a pass thru except a spined one...Last 2 bulls were not pass thru's...18 yards qtr at me almost thru tho. Moose 2 arrows at 60 yards passed thru

Having only shot one deer and one turkey, archery hunting, I don't have a lot to offer.  Both were shot with a 28 1/2" GT XT Hunter arrow, tipped with a 100 grain Muzzy Mx3.  The 22 yard deer was a double lung complete pass through, slicing clean through a rib on the way out. The entrance side lung had a perfect broadhead wound, the exit side lung was almost completely gone. The deer went about 15 yards and fell over dead. The 15 yard blood trail wasn't necessary, as I saw the deer fall, but it was almost a foot wide. The 27 yard turkey was not a complete pass through.  The broadhead exited but the fletchings did not.  Basically, I had about 27" of arrow sticking out the other side.  The turkey went about 2 yards, laid down and died within about 2 minutes.

Last two animals were full pass throughs, an Idaho bear and local  Blacktail. The bear was shot with 52 pound recurve, the deer with 50 pound longbow. Arrow weight for both was 510 grains, arrow speed 185 - 190 fps. Both with Magnus stinger cut on contact two blade broadheads. Quite frankly, when I see the speed and kinetic energy of modern compounds I can't imagine not getting a pass through unless smacking a major bone.
