Kennewick Yotes

Going to try my hand at yote hunting. Would appreciate suggestions on where to go around Kennewick, etc. Would prefer to keep drive time at less than an hour (is that possible?).

Also, gun choice--I know .270 is probably too big w/ 130 gr. I have a .22 mag--would that be too small? If not, what should the max shot be w/ it?

Sorry don't really know where to go down there. But I would use the .270 unless you really want the fur. With a .22 mag I'd say max range is like 125 yards or so. I shot a yote at 40 yards with one once though. It sure knocked him down good, but I had to shoot him 1 more time so he didn't get back up.

Ive killed a hand full of coyoyes with a .22 mag furthest was 135 hit it right in the ear hole It was the only one shot kill, all the rest required multiple hits. I would use it only at about 40 yards or less and then only with premium bullets and good broad side shots. :twocents:JB

The 100 gr .270 load is most likley going to tear a yote up really good . I think the only way a .270 won't tear a yote up is if you use a good bullet like a bonded bullet and dont hit any bone. Otherwise you just put a big Ol' hole in that yote.

Yes, it would. You'd be best off going with the heaviest bullet available (150 grain) and use a "premium" bullet such as Nosler Partition, Nosler Accubond, or Barnes TSX. The heavier bullet will be going slower and with a controlled expansion bullet you should have a small hole in and a small hole out. A 100 grain bullet would be your worst choice unless you're trying to blow the dogs in half.

Personally I would not use a .22 mag.  You probably have a shotgun, if so I would use 3 inch mag, 12 ga with 00 buck.  Good out to 50-55 yards and will really put a whallop on them.  If not I would go with the .270.  Coyote can take a serious amount of damage and still get up and leave.

Ha, just sold the shotgun to buy a BLR. I hadn't thought much about it, but I also have a 6.5X55 Swedish mauser. It's been on loan from a friend who left the country for couple of years (for work). He said I could use it, but I've been avoiding it as much as possible.

Sounds like you could use this as a opportunity to buy a new varmint gun, like something in the .224 cal.

22mag head shots,,my satisfaction in calling is how close I get them in.30 yrds and under..

I've seen lots of yote sign south of Kennewick but never sen one. Your best bet is out near Ringold. There are lots of them out there. I've camped out next to the river near Ringold more than once and had yotes walking around my tent at night.

As for caliber I'd have to say the .223 in FMJ Its small enough to not tear up the hide and big enough to put them down.

I wouldn't use an FMJ bullet on yotes, it doesn't create a big enough wound channel in the animal. Use a highly frangible bullet in a small rifle like a .223 bullets like varmit grenade, V-max, accutipV ect. If you use the .270 and want the hides use a good premium bullet like you would if you were going to hunt elk, and try not to hit bone
