Middle fork snoqualmie Bulls?
« on: August 10, 2014, 09:45:54 PM »
I'm working out of town on the paving project of the middle fork of the snoqualmie rd. Since I'm staying out of town working during the week I want to be able to hunt elk after work figure this is a good spot since it's where I'm working. Just wondering if there's ever any big bulls taken up the middle fork ever? Or if the elk are just around town? I've seen a few with collars and a couple guys have seen small bulls when we first started, I'll probly be doing nothing but bugling and walking trails since there's no clear cuts. Think I'll have any luck at all? or are there very few for how much land there is to cover?

Attend a meeting and you will probably learn quite a bit.

Just make sure you don't hunt the lands that are owned by King County. The Middle Fork is a mix of DNR, King County, and finally USFS lands.

I have read a lot about how there trying to give habitat, food etc. to try and limit their interaction with humans and provide vegetation to try and get the elk above the valley floor, just with my work schedule I don't think I would be able to make it to a meeting. But I am curious if they are trying to get elk to move back in to the middle fork, or if they are just trying to get them away from the road and camp sites. Hopefully there's some elk in there and I don't wear out my boots for nothing lol. I do know there will be very limited access for hunters because the road is closed all week for the road construction so maybe that might help me out alittle.

I'd wager that there are not many elk in that area. I know it's not an area I've heard a lot about as far as elk hunting goes. I haven't heard everything though, so take that with a grain of salt. Given what I know about the area, I'd say it's going to be tough to find elk in there. Again, I don't know a lot about that specific area in terms of elk hunting, but I feel I have a pretty decent handle on the local elk hunting scene.

Yeah seems like there's few and far between, cpl here and there. I do remember of a post I read that I think was from this forum that a guy had cameras out there and always had elk and bear on them, I think it was even a moderator from the site that posted the reply, but I think it was a few years ago wondering if there still there. Guess I'll look around after work this week and see what I come up with.

It would be a case of good luck if you do see one in a place that is legal to harvest. Most dont hunt in that area because of the amount of people that tend to saturate the area.

You guys remember Backwoods Boy?  I haven't seen him around in ages but if I'm not mistaken, that huge bull his buddy got with a muzzleloader several years ago when Backwoods' gun misfired was from the middle fork.

I've hunted that area a few times but very frustrating. You can tell they are in there but I have never seen one during hunting season except in the dark crossing the road. I've even crossed the river and seen lots of sign. Again, no elk.
A little clear cut here and there would do a lot to help!

Yeah seems like there trying to plant plants for them to coax them back in there if they would just make acpl clear cuts would defiantly bring them in, doesn't seem like they are there at all right now I drive the road ten times a day at work havnt seen any sign lately

I worked on that project for aci when it first started.  I don't think those bulls stray off private property too much.  And definitely won't stray come sept.  I'd go elsewhere.  Shouldn't have to drive too far but I wouldn't get excited about middle fork rd itself.

Ya I'm still at aci.  Been there 4 yrs.  On reservation rd in skokomish.  Saw lots of elk from the high school to the job trailer but nothing beyond.

I have actually seen elk on the middle fork road during modern season two years ago. 10 minutes after shooting light plus it was just cows and spikes and right where the road splits and the houses begin.

I've hunted up the Taylor River trail and saw lots of fresh sign. Have even crossed the river and seen fresh sign but nothing other than elk ghosts!!!

I always thought the N. Fork area looked more promising but a WDFW guy said there wasn't anything up the N. Fork road. I read later where a guy hit a 7x7 on the N. Fork road and killed it!!

A guy would need to be a relentless tracker, get real lucky or have access to private land along the river to get one down. I would like to get a bull out of the 460 before I die though.
