How would YOU approach this?
« on: August 11, 2014, 06:18:21 PM »
Okay, so maybe I'm thinking about this too much, but I am not quite sure what to do in this situation...
The picture is an example, not the real spot I have in mind. Here's my scenario: the tipi is my proposed camp location, the X is my proposed glassing location (not ideal for camp), the green dashed line is a HIGHWAY of a game trail that I have found (no boots...very very off-trail) that goes from the water, up and over the saddle.

Would you:
A) camp at the tipi, hike to the X in the dark and hope you don't spook em
B) share the mountain lion's den amongst the rocks at the glassing location so as to not cross the game trail
C) hunt on this side of the game trail in the AM then cross at midday
D) some other wise-old-sage idea that has yet to come to me...
For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!

Not sure on thermals
Open face on southside, the northside ridge is treelined (can't glass to the north from the ridge), but opens up to some GREAT terrain
I COULD just sit within 100 yds of the trail and try to pick something off, but I wouldn't be able to see anything on the northern slope.
Not sure on the food/bed either...it would seem as though they are bedding on the north side (also has a water source).

I am thinking to stay put on the southside during the AM, then watch them up and over into their beds on the northside, then cross to the summit after they leave in the morning...
My only hesitation is that, if I don't nab one then, would me crossing their path screw me for the rest of the hunt...? hmmm

Can you camp to the left of that gassing spot and just pop over the edge?

Yep. But I'd have to cross their path...is that an issue do you think?
