What's the toughest exotic animal to kill with an arrow?
« on: August 12, 2014, 09:56:57 AM »
I rarely watch the exotic hunts on TV, as they just don't interest me as much as deer, elk or turkey hunting shows.  However, I was watching one the other day and happened to see a rifle kill that piqued my interest.  It was an ostrich kill, with a large bored rifle.  This got me thinking.  We all know how tough it can be to get a complete pass through on a turkey and that's one reason why head shots are so popular.  This lead to me wondering which exotic animal would be the toughest to kill, with an arrow.  Except for a head shot, I'd have to say an ostrich would be pretty darned difficult!  Thoughts?

Elephant?

Actually, I'm not sure an elephant would be all that difficult to get penetration/pass through on, as long as your pick the proper shot placement. I've seen quite a few archery elephant kills, on television.  They always seem to die really quickly, most seem to be kidney/liver shots.

Sasquatch would be pretty tough.  He can jump out of the path of a camera and those are pretty fast.

Elephant?

Actually, I'm not sure an elephant would be all that difficult to get penetration/pass through on, as long as your pick the proper shot placement. I've seen quite a few archery elephant kills, on television.  They always seem to die really quickly, most seem to be kidney/liver shots.

I think most die quickly because the arrow shot is rapidly followed up by a bullet to the head!  Diaphragm shots probably are the better choice as you try to put the arrow behind the ribs and up into the chest.  Not many guys are going to get an arrow through those ribs.  Just ask Chuck Adams or read "Life at Full Draw"!  I know three guys that have tried broadside shots through the chest...All failed!  Two of the three were later killed with a bullet.  Third one was followed up with the shot you mentioned, behind rib through liver and diaphragm then up into the chest.  All three hunters later told me the same thing, "Some animals aren't meant to be killed with a bow!"

Of those guys and my buddy Del they all seemed to think the buffalo were well within reason of the bow and all made quick kills of them.  Del's huge hippo sounded as though went as planned when shot with his 100#+ bow, two blade broadheads and extremely heavy arrows from close range.

Giraffe seem to be extremely difficult and tough as well!  I never realized how dang big their chest was until we had one charge the jeep in Texas.  They're pretty big :chuckle: :yike:

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I've taken most of the exotics available in the states.  No ostrich though.  And I can't think of one that was any tougher than an elk.

Toughness for size though I would put goat and Sika deer rather high.  Goats have an innate ability to run till there is absolute zero blood left in their system.  And Sika deer have bones that flat out stop arrows.  They are tough little buggers!

Hardest to sneak up one would have to go the Fallow deer.  Hunted them a lot and always find myself looking like a fool watching raised tails and clean a-holes >:(
