I've dabbled KC.   Not very good at it yet.   Carpsniper has turned out some gorgeous stuff.

I used to make hand blown glass.  I made a few cool model knifes and a set of mulley antlers.  But I really want to get into knapping tagging along!  My friend had a some rainbow colored obsidian stuff that was cool. I forget where he got it.

You can get it off of ebay fairly easily.   Rainbow is some of the "better" stuff.   I have seen some I would love to have had a blade made out of or some heads.

My ultimate goal is to knap a blue agate into an arrowhead.   One showed up on here a couple months ago.  Holy cow that thing was awesome.   I've been using some agatized/opalized wood.  It is extremely unforgiving, so good to learn on I guess. It was free.    When I picked up a piece of obsidian, it seemed ten times easier to work with.   Both materials create nice bloodflow without notice.   I would think chert is the easiest to knap.   I've tried some jasper and other materials just because I had it.

I'll probably try some obsidian to start.  My buddy just got into collecting rocks and has a few pieces of opalized wood he may let me work with.

I have spent a ton of time to even get decent at knapping. I don't have as much patience and rush a little and that is my biggest problem. There is a few guys that are just amazing. I can only hope to be that good some day. You want to see amazing look at stone culture/keith hull. One of the best knappers out there  IMHO. We did a friend ship point swap and the head he sent me is flawless. The piece I sent to him was a arrow head I called heart break. I had just finished a 7" long knife and it was amazing one of my best ever. I notched the horn and slid the blade into the handle. My wife walked in and I twisted it over to show her and the blade popped out, slid on the counter and hit the floor. It broke into about 15 pieces and The very front part was still in a good shape. So I turned it into a great point.

So back to KC. I have a good amount of black obsidian from Oregon and a little from here in Washington.
Are you just looking for raw stone chucks. Or are you looking for spalls or flakes?

Do Knappers use Serpentine?

Not that I know of Jingles, though it would be really pretty.   Not sure its brittle enough.  Might carve well.   Its been awhile since I felt the stuff, but thinking it was sort of soft.
