The brakes are loud, but they sure work good. I put one on my girls 270 win because we do a lot of long range shooting in the summer.  It's a brake that Kirby Allen uses and it works awsome.  The 270 kicks about like a 22-250.  I also have one on my 270 A.M. and putting 60-80 round thru that thing is a lot of fun.  Kicks like a 243 (maybe).  And that gun weighs in at 14.5 lbs.

I have the DE break on that exact gun... my 25-06 kicks worse now. The break is that effective! As far as the noise goes... I noticed it isn't any louder to the shooter, but those in the near vicinity will be cussing you. Is it loud... hell yeah, but that's what happens when you torch off 100+ grains of powder down a .30 cal bore. If you're shooting anything more than a .22 rimfire without hearing protection you're doing your ears a serious disservice... get the brake and some muffs.

Even with a good break there will be noise. We are talking brakes here not silencers LOL.

A couple of my friends turned me onto Vais Arms, Inc.  www.muzzlebrakes.com  They have both put these brakes on their 300 RUM.  They actually make less noise now than they did before they installed the muzzle brake.  30-40% reduction in recoil, improved accuracy.  When shooting side by side - my 270 makes as much noise as his 300 RUM in a covered range after installation of the brake. If you look at this brake from the muzzle end - you will notice many drilled ports down range vs. some of the other brakes.  This moves much of the noise down range.  If you want to see where these brakes are used, check out some of your custom gun manufacturers, such as: lazzeroni  - http://www.lazzeroni.com/ct_rifles.htm

Only other major consideration is for shots close to the ground - a muzzle brake will kick up a some dust into the air, so it will be like shooting a second shot through a black powder cloud if you are in the prone position on dry dusty ground.

My wife just bought me a Remington Model 700 XCR in 300 RUM just last week for my birthday.  I haven't been able to shoot it yet, as I am still working on test loads.  But if I have any issues with it, you can bet that I will be sending my Gun to these folks for an addition of a brake.  I am starting a thread on load data for the 300 RUM to see what everyone else is having success with.

please just use a *censored* pad when you bench shoot. you will never feel it in the field. the brakes are great if you kill everything off a bench or truck hood. could be atrip to the dr's office if you shoot from the prone.

No brakes! Too loud.

My brakes are only loud to someone standing next to me or off to the side a little. Fact is that someone out in front of the gun can't hardly hear the shot. Case in point, BTKR killed a bear behind camp..we heard the shot and went back to help him pack, next day I shot a bear in the same spot and noone at camp heard the shot. It was the muzzle brake that made the difference. I don't consider the brake as a recoil buffer but as a barrel control device.
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.
He who shed blood with me shall forever be my brother.

Brent, the only experience Ill add is when my friend got one a few tears ago. I shot it 11 times with no brake. It kicked good but I would not have put a brake on it if it were mine.
He had aq bad shoulder and eneded up magna porting it. Cant say what id did for accuracy, but it did help lessen the kick. But man is it loud!

Im with the others who say get a *censored* pad for the range and run it. Put the money into your Ziess!!! ;)
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

I have to admit, I'm a 185lb (ok 190 since the holiday season started) baby when it comes to rifle recoil.  I have a Decelerator and a brake on my rifle and luv em both.  Noise is a bitch at the range but I've had no issue w/ dust or noise in the field.  Sometimes I think the brake could help w/ game.  I've shot animals and see the others stand around not knowing where the noise came from.  In cases where you might miss it may give you an extra sec or 2 to get off another shot  :dunno:

I'm not sure what brake is on my gun.  I believe it was some outfit over in MT that made it.

Good call intruder... that reflects my experience also. I weigh 260... and I'm a recoil wuss! I also can see impact on any shot over about 250 yards with my .300 RUM... that's a big deal when you're hunting alone. I must say though... that the ability to practice 5-10 times as much is the biggest advantage to the break. Most guys I know with big ass guns can only shoot them well a couple of times before the flinch gets ahold of them. I can hammer 20 rounds through the RUM bomber without any problems at all.

Here is a question for you guys with a brake....

Do you notice when shooting at game, that you forget about the brake, or flinch, worrying about the added noise?

I can't say that I've noticed it.  I agree w/ High Country in that when shootin game I'm pretty zoned in and don't notice noise, recoil, etc.

There is no added noise to the shooter... so I don't worry about it.

true enough that the brake might make it easier to get back on target.....from recoil. but if there is a big cloud of dust or worse yet crap in your eyes from the brake directing the gases back at you.......you still get one shot. if needing a brake is a pass/fail on a rifle caliber, go a little smaller.
