Chaps - Filson single tins

Just ordered, for the first time ever, a pair of Filson's single tin brush chaps.  The past couple of years walking through some of the weedy stuff over on the Snake breaks convinced me that jeans just don't cut it on their own.

Anybody have any experience with these?

everyone I know that use the pants are happy with them,so Im thinking your chaps will be awesome.stiff at first but they will break in,,  enjoy

I like mine, except for the lack of a zipper on the side. To take off the chaps, I have to first take off my boots. Which is kind of a hassle when I'm in a hurry to get them off. They do get a little warm, on the warm days. So depending on the weather, I often would wear my Cabelas chaps which are made out of cordura, are lighter in weight, do have a size zipper that goes almost halfway up, and they are cheaper. Filson does have chaps with the zipper but I believe it's only the double tin chaps, and they are $150. The Cabelas chaps you can get for $40.

You'll still love those Filson chaps, it's much better to have them than not. I don't know how a bird hunter could get by for very long without chaps. I often wore them in the mornings just to keep my pants dry, even if the brush wasn't bad enough to require them.

I have had both the single tins and the Cabelas chaps (which I currently have). Both work great, but like Bobcat said I had to take my boots off to put the chaps on or take them off. With the Cabelas the zipper allows me to put them on or remove them over my boots. What I found with the single tins also was the spots where there were crease on the inside of my legs that rubbed got holes in them after a while. Of course this was after three to four years of hard use.

Well, I thought about the Cabelas, but I've never gone wrong with Filson and they look tougher, and have that waxed fabric. Without looking at the Cabelas to see exactly what kind of cordura, I'd be buying a pig in a poke.

Have the double tin chaps because of the zipper. Works great. Relatively waterproof and definitely briarproof. Works well for the wetside uplands. No more torn pants with these babies. Downside is that they are fairly stiff (and subsequently somewhat noisy if that is an issue) and early on, the wax comes off and can stain your clothing if you are not careful. I have had to use spot remover prior to the wash a few times on my pants and jacket (even my gortex upland jacket), which has worked OK so far.
I think they are thicker than the single tin chaps which results in better protection, but are heavier and warmer especially for early season. Great for later/colder/wetter. The zipper seals the deal, and is definitely worth it. I looked at these (and other chap varieties) for a while. The cordura versions just didn't cut it for me (not much different than my upland pants) and even better, I found them on sale at Sportco last fall.

I bought both the cabelas and the single tin a couple of years ago.  I kept the Cabelas over the single tins,  I couldn't get the double tins they didn't have in my size.  Doubles tins are the best of the three, zippers are longer, the cabelas are nice the zipper is a little short so depending on what boots I wear I might have to take them off.  Single tins, deal breaker is taking off boots shouldn't be a big deal but is a major pain in the a$$. 
The Cabelas I have are also a waxed cotton and a nice copy of the Filson, just a little lighter weight if I recall correctly?


All three are better than brush pants if you need the extra protection.

Have the dbl tin in waxed and unwaxed.   Waxed is great shedding water, never wash them!   Brush everything off except barb wire.

Are the chaps better than the upland pants on the market?

I have the Filson chaps and love them.
I also have the cabelas chaps which are fine.
I love my single and double tin pants for upland bird hunting, as well as the double tin coats.
It takes a lot of wear to get the double tin to relax but once it does its great.
My Mackinaw cruiser which I have had for over 20 years is like brand new. 
Because its to warm for me to ever have a chance to wear it. But I have it if I will ever sit in a tree stand and its -40

I have some Filson Tin Pants, I like them but since i got them for working cattle in the winter I had a seamstress add a zipper to the legs. Makes getting them on and off much easier. She also did the same treatment to my Filson Mackinaw trousers. Both were much needed improvements IMO.
