Steens Unit Oregon Antelope Hunt
« on: August 19, 2014, 03:06:14 PM »
After 15+ years of trying, one of our friends finally drew his antelope tag in the Steens Unit in Oregon. It was a fun weekend, that started out with not seeing a whole lot, but we found a draw at the end of the first day that was loaded with antelope, with the biggest ones being a few miles off. The next day, it took us several hours to get to the spot where we spotted them the night before. After one unsuccessful spot and stalk, we moved on to another area, and we found one lone buck near a water hole. He took him at about 350 yards with a 270 WSM, and dropped him in his tracks.

It isn't a huge buck, but he is about 12" long, with decent bases. Overall, it was a lot of fun being out there with our hunting party and seeing some beautiful country.

Congrats, I just got back from a Juniper antelope hunt last night. Steens hunters seemed to be getting more than the Juniper hunters. I camped in Narrows between the two units. Took me 17 points to draw as a non-resident.

I gave up on drawing in Oregon.   I am glad that someone with perseverance was able to capitalize on a nice hunt.

It's a bit crazy how long it takes to draw here. Our group is thinking of a Wyoming hunt next fall. I'm not sure I want to put in for 15 years for a tag.

Congrats to him! That's a special area to hunt anything in, especially antelope!
My dad drew this tag in 2004 with like 4 points as a non-resident! It was an awesome hunt! He ended up killing a buck like the one above at 7,500' elevation at the top of McCoy Creek canyon. We also caught some bug trout in the Blitzen River, what a good time!

Sounds like you definitely had a great time! We were in the Diamond area, near Clemens Ranch Road. One of the other guys that hunts for us actually got his tag with no pref points on his first year, but has been waiting 12 years now for his second tag. It's a hard draw, but a fun hunt!

What's a "Bug" trout...sounds kinda creepy.  Do you eat those? :chuckle:

Congratulations to the hunter.

I sure am missing my antelope hunting this year.  I remember when you could get an archery antelope tag every single year in Oregon.  Though that Gerber tag was anything but a sure thing we always saw good bucks and had a great time.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
