What bullet for the 222 Rem?
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:25:12 PM »
Or more specifically what weight? Rifle will see most of it's action on coyotes. I'm not trying to turn it into a .223, just looking for an accurate bullet that will take down coyotes reliably.  I would like to keep the velocity down to reduce as much noise as possible.

I loaded mine with 40gr V-max, but it's primarily for Bobcats. I'd go ahead and do 50's or 55's depending on your twist rate. Not as flat, but the deuce is SUPER accurate. Well worth learning the trajectory. Quality bullets will flatten a Coyote out to 250 without much trouble.

I shoot the 50's out of mine. I never have worked up a load for just shoot factory stuff. I bought some of the HSM with 50 grain Calhoun bullets. Accuracy is good, but so far no yote will cooperate for a terminal performance exam. Mine is a Remmy 788, what are you shooting?

Damn Cabela's.  The wife and I braved Spokane for X-mas shopping. Had no intentions to go to Cabela's. Alas we could not find what we needed in Spoko, so Off to Cabela's we go.

I was just browsing and noticed a sign "rock bottom gun prices" or something like that. They had two Rem 799s for $369 new!  Well I already had a 22-250, and I've been wanting a 222. This thing is nice, 20" barrel Laminated stock, 6 3/4 pounds.

Well, LOL!! The list is too long. I'm definately getting a muzzy. But as far as a calling rifle I'm staying on the fence. Gonna try this new AR 60 grn load and see if it performs better. If it does I'll probably stay put for now. If not, I think I'll get the Tikka in 22-250 and use it for hard hunts and my M77 for shorter hunts since it's so heavy. It just shoots to well to sell. I came into some money so I really need to pace myself so I don't buy something that I don't really really want.  :chuckle: Tough problem to have.

What I really want is a 220 swift but I think sage found the last one, and I don't think anybody chambers them anymore.  :bash:

There are a few to be had, unfortunately not around here. I'm always a day late or a dollar short, or both. Some day.

MHWASH....I have an XP100 w/ a 15" barrel chambered in .222.  I load 19 grains of 4198 with a 50 grain Speer TNT.  No exit hole on rock chucks or coyotes.  Can't find my chrono data for speed, but shoots very well.   Would like to find a rifle in .222 also.
It never changes, but it is always different.

Looks like Remington does in their 700 VS SF II. MSRP is $1284.

Like the 40-55 grain bullets. The 40grain vmax can leave some major fur damage at 3800fps, I havent shot any coyotes with anything heavier then a 45grain bullet so I dont know how the heavier bullets do yet. :dunno:
