This afternoons blacktail. I just couldn't pass that one up.
We'll I live in Orting Wa and spend a lot of time mountain biking up in Hancock timber company land hunting off my bike and I duck hunt out at the coast and east. Also hunt idaho for wolves and whitetails. I usually bow hunt but just got a job with BNSF as a conductor so I went rifle this year. Bought the new HOYT Carbon Spyder and gave my old HOYT Ultratech to the little brother and that's what he used to take the Mulie, I was spotter he was shooter. Now about the hunt, we were bear hunting up there for three days before the archery opener and had only one bear encounter in the three days of hunting so we decided to switch gears and go after sum mulies for the one day of archery deer we had. I took him up the Gun Ranch road outside of Winthrop (not worried about telling wear always trying to help new guys out)and began glassing the steep rock faces at first light where we spotted this buck. We made a short stalk on the rocks behind sum timber and got within 45 yards when he decided to take the shot. I told him 45 yards he's moving towards 50 and I heard an arrow let fly. We heard a smack and I could see fletchings sticking out of his vitals, later found out the arrow had hit the opposite shoulder that's why no pass through on quartering away shot. Watched the buck run 50 yards and fell over. The drag was all down hill to the road. I had told my brother hey man we should just try to fill the tag on a doe since we only have one more morning but he wanted a buck after deer camp last year. He bought two deer tags and filled both on nice public land whitetails. I'll post a pic. I'm always looking to talk with people that hunt Hancock as well as I spend a lot of time up there! Thanks for the reply!
