First Birds of the Season!
« on: August 22, 2014, 07:06:04 PM »
Headed back to Washington from 3 months of commercial fishing in Alaska and have a day layover in Cold Bay Alaska. Took my Dads dog out for a walk on the tundra and he's definitely out of shape   like me but we were able to put up some ptarmigan so we had some fun.

That is really cool. Soon that will be pictures of you and your new pup. He should be a great shape for the next several years. I know his Dad is finally settling into adult dog activities....but he will be 7 soon  :chuckle:. Be sure to post some current pics of that pup when you get home.

They are Ptarmigan. Like a upland bird except they have dark meat like duck. We fried the birds the next day for breakfast before I flew out so they are tasty.

Dusty,

Ptarmigan have subspeices just like grouse, Willow and Rock are at least two of the subspecies willows live on the tundra and Rocks are mountain dwellers,we actually have Rocks up near Mt Baker, there is no season for them but we do have them,I've seen them in both color phases up there, summer brown and winter white.
