Primer question
« on: August 23, 2014, 07:43:21 PM »
Does changing the primer in a load change the ballistics? When I bought my custom rifle the builder figured out the load for the rifle and gave me 50 rounds. Now that I'm set up to reload I cant find the primers locally. He was using CCI 250's but the local Cabela's never has them in stock , they put 10 boxes on the shelf this morning and they were all gone by 10:30 when I got there.  What happens when you change primers? Thanks Allen.

yes, it can change the velocity--so the ballistics too.  Some of the primers can have 100+ fps difference.

It can also change accuracy a lot in my experience.  Might be worth a road trip to get what was used in the original recipe. 1000 primers can last a while.

I you are desperate I have almost a full box and would give 2 or 300 to get you by until you find some. You would need to meet me in E burg while I am headed to Othello next weekend on Saturday. Not sure if I am headed over in the morning or afternoon yet though.  You can PM me if that day works for you.

Thanks guys for confirming what I thought. I was just being cheap and trying to avoid paying the $20+ hazardous shipping fee.  TVHunts I appreciate the offer.

One of the few good things Sportsman's has been doing in the reloading section has been stocking CCI primers.  I've found the 250's there every time I've needed them.  Now if they could keep a bullet in stock other than Barnes I'd be happy ;)
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
