I was scouting on Sunday 8/24 - visited few spots and found nothing  :'( , NO droppings, tracks or rubs. By the way, Headquarters Rd - weyco closed most of the areas for public access, a lot of "no hunting" signs, same for Ostrander Rd. Few spots avaliable on Kalama River Rd but again no signs of deer or elk  :bash:
Hopefully that helps, Good luck!

Hey RamDrey....question. Are they not letting anyone go in on Headquarters road or did they only restrict vehicle access? The Weyerhaeuser message says the area around the land fill is closed down, but wondering if you are allowed to hike/bike in past the landfill and hunt 2 or 3 miles back.

You can go on Headquarters Rd, but there are no spots where you would be able to go hunt, because of the private property, "no hunting" signs, or weyerhaeuser orange signs for "no public access". One spot at the end of 1600 rd has "no motorized public access" by weyerhaeuser, under my understanding sounds like fill free to hike  ;) Good luck!

I work for the county that owns the landfill. Headquarters road at the gate is closed to all public entry. Due to safety concerns with all of the logging, landfill and construction traffic. There is also a buffer around the landfill that is closed to hunting and access. Trust me. With all of the traffic up their you don't want to be on that road. Besides weyco moved the main 1600 gate about 1/2 mile behind the landfill. You can also drive in from the access gates if you have a permit. There is a gate you can access just before the big gate. I'm not sure if it's an access gate to drive in though. Do you have a weyco permit?

Thanks for the info. I have the permit so if vehicles are permitted I can come in from one of the access points. If they only allow non-motorized access I think its a pretty long haul from one of the access points to areas up off Headquarters road.

A lot of things area changing from previous years now that Weyerhaeuser is selling permits and allowing vehicles behind gates. I am just trying to figure out where I can go on foot on a bike and not have to deal with vehicle traffic. I plan on giving this one year to see how things go, but I am not very excited about vehicle access since in my experience it shuts the elk up very quickly.

I'm on the same boat Littlefish. I wasn't to thrilled about the vehicle access during archery season. I've been hunting the tree farm long enough that I've got a few spots picked out to try but I don't think the elk will be too vocal. I've been wrong before though! I've been up at that landfill working on weyco's old equipment and I've seen a lot of horses, quite a few deer but since they started building a new garbage cell up there I haven't seen any elk. I'm sure they are around though. Just make sure you stay outside the boundary and you'll be good. Good luck!
