Hello folks,
I wanted to post pics and a little story about the buck I was fortunate enough to harvest this year, but hesitated since I got him on the reservation and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how some of you feel towards wagon-burning-blanket-a$$es.
I understand how some of you feel about dealing with treaty tribe's and I myself had to deal with it a little while I was attending school in the Seattle area and went hunting on the penisula.
But let me point out that although I am Indian I am not from a treaty tribe, and while I got him on my reservation it is small, being 9 miles long by 1.5 miles wide at the widest point. we don't have rights or privileges outside of those boundaries. when I hunt off the reservation I buy tags and adhere to the same rules as anyone else.
My reservation is in GMU 113 right on the Pend Oreille river. the ice in the background of my pictures is CCA creek where it comes close to meeting the river, it actually is more of a slough and is frozen over since this was last Thursday the 4th.
It was/is the biggest buck my taxidermist has seen this year, and the biggest whitetail my butcher has weighed this year, weighing in @ 155 dressed with no fat on him. side note, the taxi had 87 mounts to do last year and this year only has 21 IIRC.
No pictures of myself posing with him since I was alone, I had to prop his head up with a forked cottonwood branch. and before anyone asks, yes that is a lefty rifle, a WIN M70 classic rebarrelled with a Lilja 270 tube. shot a .326" C-to-C 5-shot group with the same load I hunt with.

Damn fine buck. IMO he looks pretty close to 150. Should make a great mount. Would like to hear more about the actual hunt. Congrats.

thanks for all the great replies guys, more to how I got him.
@ 8:30am my cousin and I were chasing a 5x5 about 1.5-2 miles south of where I got this one & north of our buffalo pastures, he had cool color in his cape making it appear at 1st glance to be a mulie (no mulies down here, saw 1 doe last spring, 1st one I've seen in 20 years). the valley floor is cut up by sloughs and on the edges of every hayfield there are thorn bushes, willows, cottonwoods & ponderosa pines with a little lodgepole pines mixed in. We were talking about where to look next when we talked about across the creek from my house, my other cousin (his brother) got a nice 4x4 whitetail over there last year & hardly anybody goes over there because of the access.
So I went to the south end of the creek and parked and started walking north along the west edge of the creek where it turns more into a slough. the wind was blowing west-to-east and the sun was at my back, I walked about a 1/2 mile and I saw a doe about 20-30 feet from the edge of the ice eating out in the open. I stopped & watched her with my binos, moving back & forth to keep her in sight, earlier my cousin & I were talking about how the bucks we saw were behaving, I knew she wouldn't be alone. after about 20 minutes I saw a buck in the sun facing straight at me. He moved before I could get the glasses on him, but I found him in the willows and waited for him to move into the clear. after a couple of minutes he stepped into an opening and I lined up on him & fired, he didn't react at all, I panicked and reloaded and he walked in a half-circle getting about 10 yards farther out and I lined up on him again and fired, he didn't react again and panic really started to set in! while I was reloading again he jumped into the willows. I sat and watched for about 30 minutes and then decided to go see what might have happened.
I tried to sneak in but since the mud and the wet grass was frozen it was CRUNCHY. I walked to where he was when I 1st shot and then followed to where he was @ the 2nd shot and then looked into the willows where he had jumped and he was laying there! I drug him to the edge of the water and went to get my boat so I could retrieve him. I got home, put my boat in but found the ice too thick and only made it about 20-30 feet before abandoning that plan. I went back to the south end of the creek & since it is my land I drove my cherokee to him busting brush the whole way! hoping I wouldn't hit a hidden stump or down cottonwood. (My brother got high-centered on a cottonwood with his fat horse once when we rounding up cows in there).
after all this I got my rangefinder out and checked the distance, 1st shot 289, 2nd shot 297. upon dressing him I found I hit him both times, either shot would been fatal taking out the lungs from one side, then the other.

About the pics, I have one on my phone that I think would be good for the photo-of-the-month contest but can't find my adaptor to get it on my PC. Ironically in one of the other pictures I took you can see my house!
Love that cape! the taxi estimated him to be 7 or 8 years old.
Lots more luck for being in the right place at the right time than being a "good hunter" but as I told my friend who was calling me a g**d@mn lucky SOB, "I got him, so I'll take luck, hell yeah!"

very nice buck!! Wa produces some wopper bucks, even though it isn't known for that, and seems to be better bucks every year. Great job, doesn't matter to me about the reservation, still extremely hard to kill a buck like yours.

Cool. Great post. I knew there must be some nice bucks around there. I was visiting family in Idaho for Thanksgiving and my brother and I went muzzy hunting in that area for half day. We drove through the reservation, and continued a little north of it. We were looking for someplace along the river, but it was our first time in the area, so we weren't sure about access. So we hunted the hills. We saw alot of frozen tracks. No real fresh sign. Beautiful area!
