shot shell
« on: August 26, 2014, 05:44:10 PM »
So just to  :stirthepot: a bit.  with all the different ammo out their i am wondering what people are using.  so with that in mind post up what your using on ducks and geese and why you use it.

last year i was using 3 in 12 guage Federal sped shock and the same in 3.5 for goose.  main reason was they were cheap and i was on a tight budget.

I had good success with them no complaints.

I only hunt geese over fields - no dog. BBs, BBBs, and Ts/3". I'll get flamed because it's dirty ammo, but I use Black Cloud. It's cheap and it knocks them down.

3" Win supreme #4 for ducks and BB's for honkers.
The parrern well in my gun with factory choke tubes.  Never a misfire or failure to cycle in my spaggetti gun.

I have at least a couple of cases of both loads, I have not looked lately, do they still sell the stuff?
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

But I really do shoot a lot of BB's. :chuckle:
4 shot is good early in the season or if the weather is right and the ducks are low.
Everything I shoot is 3"

Dirty is right.... if you are a good shot, then black clouds tear up huge holes in the meat.
But, if you suck at shooting...   they are great. Cause it only really takes 1 bb to tear through a duck and kill it.

I bought a few boxes of 2 3/4 #6 once and limited out 2 days in a row using them. It was kinda a fluke but very memorable. All the birds dropped in at15 yards wind at my back.

You should really shoot more for the head and neck. Try it sometime.

In the past I used whatever was on sale at Walmart or Bi-Mart.  I have a good bit of Winchester Super X, Remington Sportsman Hi-Speed Steal, & Federal Speed-Shok.  Mostly in #2 and #3.

Last year when Hevi-Metal put their rebates out I bought a few 3" #2 boxes to Try it.  I really like the loads and bought 3 more boxes on sale this year with rebates again.  I don't like that it is almost $1 a shell but I get less cripples trying to swim away so I end up using less and folding more birds.

3" #2 - 1-1/8 -1-1/4 oz. Nothing slower than 1,400fps.  Usually shoot Hevi-Metal, but don't have any issues with the cheap stuff.  It drops them just fine as long as you figure out your lead.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I will shoot just about anything at ducks, 2 3/4 up tp 3 1/2, 6 shot and up. Geese, I shoot 1 3/8 oz of BBs in 3", which is my favorite, but will soot the 1 3/8 oz 3 1/2'' if that is all that is available. Much more shot out of a 12ga  3 1/2 the pattern begins to suffer.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!
