Broadhead and Field tips not same .... just adjust sight?
« on: August 27, 2014, 09:19:53 AM »
Seems every year I go through this..... thought I had it fixed, but noooooo!
Took my bow to the shop and everything seemed ok, then again.... my fault I didn't shoot enough tests, but it's a range where I have to wait for whomever to finish shooting.   :bash:
So, paper tuned good, walk back good, shop says timing is on, and I'm still shooting low and left.
I live in Bellevue, so driving down to Vancouver is a little out of the way (maybe next year, same with maybe getting a bow press and figuring it out myself)
It's a Hoyt CE.... shooting 68-70 lbs with CE Mayhem 350's / Beeman ICS Hunters 340  (both arrows are same weight and fly the same)
Never had a problem until I put a new Hoyt string on it last year.... go figure
 :bash: :bash: :bash:

All that said....  Is there a problem with adjusting my sight for broadheads during the season?

At this point if your broadheads will group well with each other i would say just sight to them. You could try small rest adjustments but its fairly late and if you dont have experience doing that it could cause more problems.

:yeah:

The proper answer is to broadhead tune.  But this late?  if they group well, just move the sight and you'll be putting the arrows where you want them.  nothing wrong with that.
How long til elk season?!??

My broadheads always drop a little faster out more than 20 yards. They fly fine but they do drop faster. My 20 yard pin is good. My 30-yd pin is about 4" low. My 40-yd pin is 6" low. I now use the 40 for 35 and my 50 for 40. I've never had field points and broadheads shoot exactly the same. I know a bunch of guys will come on here and tell me my arrows or bow aren't tuned right, but that's not the case. I believe that a 125 gr broadhead has more surface area and more drag than a 125 grain field point.

100 gr Slick Tricks, and yes my broadheads group just fine...
Spin tested the broadheads....
Full rt helicle on the fletching.  Whisker biscuit rest, D loop.

A nice guy stood behind me at Kenmore a couple weeks back and said all arrows visually flew the same.
I only have a 20 yard range in back yard...  so will have to wait for camp to go 30-40-50

Might try the pro shop one more time on Friday...   :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:  (only advantage of being unemployed)

Those broadheads should fly pretty much the same as the field points. I shoot the same and index the vertical blade with my string. How are yours indexed? Are they all the same?

indexing the blades will have absolutely no affect on flight.

Id guess foc might be off. Im shooting my muzzy mx4 to the same point as my field points out to 80yards. Might want to check your spine of the arrows and spine test the arrows.

Off by 4" low and 2 " left... at 20 yds
Consistent between arrows ie. beeman or Mayhems

Is it wrong to just sight for broadheads, or is something way wrong with my setup?
oh well I have 3 more days to hose with it.

Think I'll try another walk back tune etc. etc.    I have the least expensive WB, and if I could find a place that sold the one with the micro adjustments I'd buy it.

don't think my wife will let me buy a bowpress, and I'm wary of hosing everything.

My bh's were five inches off from my fp's at 40yds.  Tried chasing my tail with broadhead tuning.  I put the bh's away and followed the 'kitchen sink' tuning method with field tips.   Google it.  Worth the time.  Helped my form too.

I focused first on getting my bow tuned and having better grip (no torque) and consistent anchor.  Bh's now hit same as fp's.  No 'broadhead tuning' per se required.

I'm now a believer that a properly tuned bow is something the averages Joe like me can do on their own.

The advise the others gave to just sight in to your bh's at this point in (limited) time is probably the wisest.

When you have more time you can work on tuning, form, or what ever is causing the bh's to group differently.

Completely agree.  And by the way, I caught that you are using helical vanes with a WB.  Not sure that is a great idea in the long run, but don't change it now just before the season!
