looking to up grade my ammo
« on: August 31, 2014, 11:08:27 AM »
Im shooting 150gr core lokt and looking for a better range and hard hitting bullet for bear and elk. I'm looking at Barnes, Speer and nosler at the moment. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Rem 700
chambered in 7mm mag.

Up your grains. 175 out of 7mm mag has worked excellent for me.

I've shot Barnes x and partitions and they are both excellent bullets

I really like what I'm reading about the x bullet. Only thing bad I've heard is they foul the barrel with copper build up. But so leaning towards them.

Have had great success with 165 grain core-lokt out of our 06s on deer, elk, & bear.

If your looking for factory ammunition. Double Tap, Winchester & Nosler all have factory 7mm Magnum offerings with the 160gr Nosler Accubond. Which is a excellent bullet with a great BC.

Accubonds are good, and I'd agree with the 160 grain in that bullet. If you go with Barnes, I'd go lighter, maybe 140 or 150.

Haha I saw carp replied and my first thought was he'd mention accubonds! I switched from partitions a few years ago and I will only load accubonds now.

Friends and I have been shooting(Handloading) Accubonds since they hit the streets and they have performed flawlessly. I still slum  ;) a Hornady InterLock here and there which I feel is a excellent bullet also.   We have used Accubonds on game with the .300 WSM & 150's, .270 WSM & 140's, 7x57 & 140's, 7mm Ultra Magnum & 160's, .375 Ultra Magnum & 260's, 300 Win Mag & 165's  and the 25-06 & 110's.

I've been shooting 150's through my .300 wby and have been real happy. I wanna load some 140's for my dads .280! Anyone have any 4831 for sale??

For shizel :chuckle: I went from partitions to accubonds myself. I still run some partitions every once in awhile when I break out my finnbear 300 win. I have also started running the etips and been really happy with them. I have shot 2 bears and 3 boar hogs and all have turned to stone on impact.

I have found weight retentions with normal shot placement to be around 70-75%. Anytime I have gone threw a lot of heavy bone like a double shoulder shot. I have found my weight retention to drop to around 50%.

We have been using Hornady Innerloc or SST for most guns with muzzle velocity less than 2,900 and Accubonds for muzzle velocities above that.  All have performed very well under 400 yards.  Still shooting Core-Lokt out of the .308 since that gun/ammo has never failed and it shoots OMG good!  But the past five years everything else has changed as above.  I become a bigger and bigger Accubond fan with every animal we shoot with them!  Now if Nosler would just make the 200 grain 8mm again :bash: :bash:
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
