Opening hour blacktail
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:07:50 AM »
After many years of intense effort I have killed a Blacktail with my bow.  I have practiced for the last five years in preparation for that one shot.  I have killed deer in the past five years but only with the rifle.  As I get the same rush with my 30/06, the intensity is 100 fold with the bow.  I have felt that intensity since the day I began hunting with the bow.  The greatest part about it is, I think my son may now have the same infectious addiction to the same intensity we all search for while hunting.  Because as luck would have it he got to be a first hand witness to my first archery kill.

So my son and I set out around 5 to go to the critters.  We get in the woods and seen a few way off no bucks.  So we set off further.  My son was tired at this point it about 8 am.  So he wants to rest.  I tell him I'm going down here to glass I'll be back.  I walked to the landing to find a two point at 119 meters, grazing.  I get back up to my son (he's already sleeping) and wake him.  We get to the landing and no buck.  So I have him sit down and watch.  I drop in the cut and get a little further than I had seen him last.  No deer.  I get up on a stump and see a alder getting torn up.  So I wait.  A minute later my boot fell about 12 inches into the soft stump.  The alder patch explodes with deer.  First a doe and a fawn went right, 80 meters so I set my pin.  Then the buck showed left he was bounding up and away. So I range him at 75.6 meters he gets a few more yards in distance, with my pin still set to 80 meters I come to full draw and settle my pin leading the deer.  Good release and thwack!  he heads straight up the hill towards my son, I can see my arrow but it looks like a lot of it was still out he turns and parallels my son coming within feet of him.  then he came in my direction I nocked another arrow and it went silent.  Another doe came out of the brush afterward but I never heard him again.  As I got to the top and asked my son what he saw he exploded like the brushy alder draw I was just in.  "There was blood everywhere dad the arrow was flopping around and he was pouring blood.  You got him dad you got him!".  So we get on the blood and three markers into the trail I almost trip on him.  I hit him further back than planned but with the speed he was hopping through the brush I was happy I killed him.  This kill has been along time coming and is much deserved.  Good luck to everyone and be safe.

Very cool. Sounds like a good time with your son and meat for the freezer. That's a long shot... And a moving target. Nice shooting.

Pics added.  Thanks guys!  yeah long shot but good results.  My bow is 72 lbs bowthech 360 with a trophy ridge revo 2 and a hoggfather micro.  The arrow almost came out the other side.  I probably got 12-15 inch of arrow in him.  Now to see what this thing does to bull.

87 yards at a moving deer?  You got lucky.  Glad it worked out for you but please don't do it again.

That shot has the potential to wound more animals than it kills, period.

Not my place to judge.  I am afraid to shoot the side of a barn, the weapons moves so badly.  I think he did just fine.  Let's leave it at that, shall we?

I guess the way I look at it is that he is new to the sport and maybe doesn't have proper perspective.  There are a few of us that work too hard for our seasons to make them shorter due to apparent success at longer distances.  Flame if you like.

Nice job!

Don't let the fart dust ethics club get to you.....Some people feel the need to apply their lack of ability to others and call it "ethics".

It is all about the perception.  Go ahead and do it if you want but don't post it on the internet.  At least tell a fib and say it was standing still. IMHO.

So, you would rather teach your son to lie?

Back on topic and to the shooter. Congrats
I am not an archery hunter, but my brother can hit his mark all day @ 100yds. He took an elk couple days ago in WY, frontal shot with more than half the arrow penetrating. To each his own.  :twocents:

Enjoy the venison. Super cool your son was there to experience it.

How about a video...  I hope it's on the card.  It's just a go pro but I got the shot on film.  I'm loading the card now and it's taking forever....
