Coyotes in deer spot
« on: September 26, 2014, 01:22:03 PM »
I will be hunting modern deer.  Recently my trail cam has been showing a few coyotes on the trail.  The bucks are still coming in however but only at night.  Should I go in and try to take care of the yotes?  Or should I let it be as to not disturb the deer?  Thanks for any advice

This time of year, the bucks are transitioning into their nocturnal patterns so I don't think it is the yotes that are causing it. I also wouldn't go in there blasting away on coyotes if you want to target a buck. In one of my whitetail spots, I had these two dang yotes that walked by my stand multiple times but being that I was rifle hunting, I didn't want to make the ruckus of hosing them.

I sat and watched two coyotes for about 45 minutes prior to killing my buck this year.  I generally have a policy to not screw up my deer hunting by taking one.   As far as I know he could have cared less about them.   Wolves a different story.   I always see a lot of yotes while hunting and photographing.  For the most part they are just part of the ecosystem and the deer aren't too bothered by them.

I do have a different story though......
I was watching three muley does down in the river bottom and these coyotes were harassing them.  Turned out to be 7 total.   They had the deer circled up...a deer would take a run at one and theyd close and the deer would turn back into the group.   I swear the deer finally spotted me and came my direction.  They ended up walking within about 5 feet of me with a coyote on their heels.   I hit the first one at about 3 feet with a 200 grain nozler (yes I got lectured), but the coyote was instantly tube skinned.   I then opened up and got two more with my remaining rounds.   I  was headed to work shortly anyway. :)

I've had the same bucks each day or so and bears, coyotes, turkeys, horses and as of yesterday a bob cat, the deer keep coming back. Now if I start seeing cougars and no deer then I have a problem.
