Idaho and Montana backcountry hunting with ATV???
« on: September 02, 2014, 03:11:57 PM »
Living in AK I have acquired lots of toys that help me get deeper into the woods  :chuckle: I was wondering are there places in Idaho and Motana I would be able to use my wheelers and side by sides to get in 20-30 miles and camp/hunt that with out them you couldn't get to? I know WA has great backcountry but its non motorized.

thanks
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I'm taking it there's not really any back country you can take them into? Without them in AK you'd be in trouble! Appreciate any info.

Thanks

I know there's tons of area you can ride in Idaho. I just don't know enough to give you specifics. I know one of the major landowners in northern Idaho, Potlatch, allows ATV's behind many of their locked gates. Try googling "potlatch Idaho ATV" and I bet you'll find lots of info.

Potlatch has a lot of land and a lot of trails, but I don't think you'll get get away from the wahoo's who have OHV's. I was there the other day and a lot of camps are already set up. Some of the roads are gated with no acess. Potlatch charges an acess  fee, you can check it out on there web site

Teach,
Idaho allows great ATV usage on roads and trails but there are several units in Idaho that have ATV restrictions, they are all noted in the Idaho Hunting Regs.

FYI - Motorcycles are actually more useful in Idaho. You can take motorcycles on most any trail unless specifically restricted by the local forest and in wilderness areas nothing motorized is allowed.

Going cross country on any motorized vehicle of any kind is going to be illegal on public lands in the lower 48, you will need to stay on roads/trails open to the type vehicle you are using. In many cases you can get a motorized access map for the Forest or BLM you intend to hunt.
