Mazama Bear hunting
«
on:

Headed up there next weekend with my buds that archery hunting. I thought I would take off and go look for a bear.............any of you bear hunters, know of a place I should start? Never hunted bear and don't have an archery deer tag............just need to at least get out and carry the rifle out in the woods. No not looking for any honey holes just a place (road) to start from. Never been up there. Thanks for the info in advance............

Well it is not in Mazama but it is pretty close by. We saw some bear right behind Pearygin Lake in Winthrop around Cougar Lake.
I got my bear up the Twisp River valley. We just took a forest service road 10-15 miles up the valley and glassed the draws and faces where there were berries. Early mornings and late evenings are the best time to see them moving around.
Good luck.

I'v hunted a lot over there for bear and deer and all the areas that were mentioned we have seen bear. Early morning and late evening have been the best times for us. One road that I really like is fs rd 500 off of goat creek rd, head up goat creek toward banker pass and it is on your left, it goes way back up into a burned area that was burned back in 95 and has a lot of dead trees and under brush for cover. We shot 2 bears in 2 days up there in 2006 one that weighted 300 and scored 19 8-16ths. good luck. Rodger

YEP!
ITs also a good place to predator call for them using a fawn in distress call. Its a HUGE fawning area.

I would stick with the .338 since its a little more legal for what you are going to run into.

If nothing else you will love the country. Make sure you get up to Sweetgrass. Its gorgeous this time of year. Throw in a 22 or 410 as there are lots of grouse.

I shot mine up on East Fawn creek road. Have also killed bear on the Renedvous road up top were the timber starts for the next couple miles after that, there is a ton of bear in there for some reason. Sweet Grass is a great spot, shot my deer up there on the first but you will run into a ton of hunters, theres a boned out deer carcass on the 400 road probably a bear standing on it
