how do I know when I'm in passayten wilderness from mazama
« on: September 04, 2014, 12:24:47 PM »
I have never done the high hunt in pasayten but I have hunted all over past the ranger station and have killed some nice bucks during the general season. My question is where do the boundaries start for the high hunt up there. Thanks for any answers on my kinda stupid question

Sounds like you need to stop in Winthrop and buy a map.

I have been looking at hunting that area during general season, several maps have been helpful. Green trails maps, the Delorme Washington atlas, and the onyx maps on my iphone. That makes it fairly foolproof.

Not sure what you mean with that last post, but if you get a map that shows the wilderness boundary, you would have a way of knowing when you were inside the boundary, which is what the question was, correct?

That's what I would do.

I'm pretty sure the USFS office in Winthrop will sell you a map.

The forest service has signs that mark the boundaries of wilderness areas. Keep your eyes open and you should see them.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a unit map from cabelas but its hard to tell where the boundary starts like from the look out. I'm gonna do another scouting/bear hunt up there all this weekend I will look for those markers mentioned.one more question are all those gold claims up there in the high hunt area?

I've never had to ask where boundaries are ROCKWHEELER. I look for signage, white corner posts with coordinates on them and check my GPS. You're going to get the " rookie " blues from guys on here for asking, just because you have a LOW post number. Personally, I don't care about asking, because that's the only way you're going to get info from us........... Good luck....
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

They have signs on the trails, but if you don't hike in on an established trail you won't see a sign.  :twocents:

Good info.  I haven't hiked the trails other than crossing them. How's the hunting pressure  up there better than the general season?

They have big signs on the trails and when you are off trail they have signs nailed to trees roughly 10-15' off the ground. I'm not sure on the exact spacing of the signs and they are very easy to walk right by.

Get yourself a Forest Service map. You can buy them at Ranger Stations. If you have a GPS, use the national forest service layered maps. The wilderness boundaries are shown on those. I use the Gaia GPS  app for my iPhone. All of the topo, satellite, and forest service maps are free. Great offline use with that app as well. It will outperform every handheld GPS I have ever seen. Boundaries, trails and everything else you could ever want to see on a map are there.

Make sure you get something to show you the boundaries. You don't want to be hunting accidentally in a none wilderness area. Those boundaries change direction and it would be very easy to wander outside of them when trekking through the bush off trail.

Download US topo maps on your phone.  It will show you exactly where you are at and the wilderness boundary

If memory serves , from where you are talking about there is a wooden sign on a post down the trail that says "Passayten wilderness".  or something to that effect.  I wish I could find my picts .

No offense, but if it's your favorite place on earth,  then why are you asking how to know when you're in the wilderness? :dunno:

I believe when he says its his favorite place on earth, he means he enjoys being out in the woods. Not specifically that area.  :twocents:
