Bear Hunting in the Wild Sky Wilderness
« on: September 05, 2014, 02:39:15 PM »
Can anyone provide any information about the regulations concerning hunting in the Wild Sky Wilderness?

I looked on the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest web site, and it said that the National Forest is open in accordance with Washington Regulations. However, it doesn't say much about hunting the Wild Sky Wilderness specifically. I called the Skykomish Ranger station, but the lady that answered the phone said that a WDFW special permit is necessary to hunt there. However, she didn't seem very sure of herself and couldn't provide any more details when I pressed her. I looked, but I can't find any information about this in my hunting regulations handbook.

Can any of the more experienced Washington hunters provide any insight into this? Is the wilderness open for hunting? Do I need a special permit from either Washington state or the Forest Service? Any special rules and regulations (other than no motorized access)?

As far as I know when I used to hunt it, it's fair game for bear, not part of the high hunt for deer and open to all general seasons.

Wilderness is open to hunting.
No special permits, passes, licenses needed aside from the trail passes and maybe a parking pass.
Make sure you follow the special laws regarding wilderness areas... ie no wheels, no motorized anything, etc.
No special rules regarding hunting.

Trail passes are at the trailheads. Parking passes at the local ranger station...for the Wild Sky Wilderness, it'd be in Skykomish.

Was up in the Wild Sky today and saw ZERO Bear sign up at about 5600ft. Figured I would atleast see a bear since I did not bring a rifle with me. I finally got the wife up to Evergreen Mtn with me.

Thanks for the information. Are you able to get your trails pass after hours at the Ranger Station? Or do I need to stop by during business hours?

That's too bad that you didn't see any bear over the weekend. I assume you drove to the main trailhead and hiked up Evergreen Mountain with your wife?

There are several gas stations etc along highway 2 that sell trail passes if you don't want to wait for the ranger station to open up. But most of the trails that require a parking pass get hit pretty hard by hikers thus the bear activity won't be very good. Not alot of berries this year unless you are up high in the North Fork of the Sky area and there is lots of hikers there. As you know Wild Sky is not a high hunt area and will probably never be. I would be expecting to see alot for deer but you can probably pick up a bear if you are willing to put in plenty of time.

you can get the passes needed at gold bar grocery, they open at 7;00 am,I think what she meant is a northwest trail pass.and also use your  wa yellow tag with your lic # on the rear view mirror.  Bear are mostly down low now as the berries are scarce.if you find good patches then you might be good to go?
