but, given that flossing is legal in this state...
-dave
nope, wrong there:

Gear Rules
You May Not:
Snag or attempt to snag fish.

Snagging is defined as:

Attempting to take fish with a hook
and line in such a way that the fish does not
voluntarily take the hook(s) in its mouth. In
freshwater, it is illegal to possess any fish
hooked anywhere other than inside the mouth or
on the head.

in other words, if you aren't fishing for bites, you aren't fishing legally.  i get that it's hard to prove, but it ain't hard to do it the right way, at least if you're willing to learn how.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

The Puyallup is a flossery all the way.  It's legal and I've done it myself so I'm not going to knock it.

The state defines snagging as attempting to take a fish with a hook and line in such a way that the fish does not voluntarily take the hook in its mouth.

So explain to me how flossing is legal.
Maybe a better question is whether anyone has been cited for flossing.  Not that I've ever heard and thousand of people do it.

How do you know he's flossing?

Flossing is more clear when you look at the length of the leader.  If someone thinks that those kings, cohos, and pinks are actually eating the corkie and yarn combo then they should only be fishing a 1-2 foot long leader.  Just that simple.

I use 4-5 feet leaders on anything I use a leader for. Especially walleye fishing or trolling plugs for steelhead and salmon

A couple "food for thoughts"/my  :twocents:

1. The visibility in the Puyallup when the weather is warm is literally nil. I'm sure a few fish could be enticed to biting a big wrapped quickfish or a gob of eggs if you hit them in the face with it. The long leader is realistically the only way very many fish are going to get harvested. Shorter leaders line fish too, just not as efficiently. Would you rather have them pile up in the hatchery pond, turn black, and get sold to a rendering plant?

2. Gray river = gray area :dunno: It's not like he's the only one doing it. Guess we better just lobby to shut the whole fishery down...? I have fished the Puyallup for close to 45 years. Sometimes it still freaks me out to see the crowds during salmon runs. But at this point- it is what it is- at least people are enjoying an easily accessible resource.

3. I believe it is probable that a fairly high % of fish caught side-drifting with typical longish leaders are lined. Same claim could apply to flyfishing when numbers of salmon are present. Dick Nites on longish leaders are very popular in many rivers, and make a fairly efficient lining rig also.

4. Lining (or flossing as has become popular) involves no more of a hookset (or attempt to snag) than reacting to an actual bite. Developing the feel for it actually takes a good degree of touch. Fish are hooked in the jaw, typically on the far side of the mouth from the outside in. Legal to keep by the law.

5. This guy's verbage may be on the different side, and his pics could use some work, but I see no harm he's caused. His posts have been the liveliest thing in the fishing section for quite awhile.

Yes, singleshot12, they are. I see people like him all the time, and it sickens me  that they get away with it. Both fishing violations and just general BS. I saw a drift boat on the river last winter drop 4 safeway bags full of mt beer cans into the water and bonk a native. They are out there and are getting away with it. Sad, legal and ethical sportsmen pay for it. :bash:

Finally someone else see's the light  Anyone who has fished the rivers long enough know the type and can recognize them a mile away, tongue out smack talk and all. I don't care if people floss as long as they keep their limit move on and let the next fisherperson in.
All I know is I can't count how many fishin holes that have been closed off due to slob fisherpeople.

Oh the morality of it all..  Most of the guys pissin and moaning about a lil flossing don't walk on water.     Most prolly watch porn, use illegal drugs, cheat on their wives but are gonna crucify a guy snaggin some salmon for the freezer or a canning jar.   LMAO

I used to snag with a corky and warn in the Green and North Fork Toutle, kalama rivers.   6 fish coho limits for everyone and the thousands that make it past everyone and can't be used in an allready full hatchery go to dog food.  lol   I always wished the leftovers would be canned and sent to poor or struggling families..  Suppose dogs gotta eat too.

But really?  All you guys have that high of a moral standard that you look down upon a guy flossin dogfood?  Give me a break.  laffin

By the way,  will  all you all stop being filthy pigs and clean your gear and trash up off the river banks and when all you "Morally Righteous" are done shooting and with target practice in the hills.  Pick your trash up, I'm tired of cleaning  up all your *censored*.

(please avoid using profanity)

How exactly is it possible to conclude that the OP is getting away with fishing violations or being a slob  :dunno:
