2000 Ford Ranger Brake issues
« on: September 13, 2014, 02:28:27 PM »
So I got my truck from my dad a little more than a year ago. He had it for 5 years or so since it had 70K on it. Now has 140K. He is a stickler for normal maint and records everything. Less than 15K miles ago he did all new brake pads, rotors, and bearings on the fronts (and he is not a novice at this). I started noticing some shaking coming down a few hills. It just got worse and worse. My dad told me it couldnt be brakes cause he just did them all, had to be my driving. He finally looked at it for me and found a snapped bolt in the suspension and the pads on one side were about toast. We replaced those but it was still shaking coming down hills and kind of pulsing and i could feel pulsing against my foot from the pedal as I would steadily brake coming to a stop sign or light. After several others opinions I got new rotors and installed them with a buddy and his dad (his dad had a respectable mechanical background). He pointed out to me that the passenger side spindle is going to need to be replaced. We re-packed the bearings and put it all back together and there was no shake, it finally was running and braking perfect. Then after a few days and coming down some substatial hills, today the red brake light and ABS lights both came on and have stayed on. Any ideas? Brake fluid and lines are good. Could it be that spindle? Here is a picture of the worn spindle
oh and the ranger is 2wd 4cyl 5spd. 2wheel ABS

Had a 99 ranger myself. Ended up having an almost entire front end replacement. Had the brake shimmy like you are experiencing. And the brakes pretty much gave up the ghost all at once. Turns out my ball joint were completely shot, as well as one of my tie rod ends being bent. Might be something to look into. When I took apart the rear brakes all the springs inside fell out lol. Gotta love that midwestern rust.

If it's 2 wheel ABS it's rear and the front brakes won't have anything to do with it. Call a few parts houses to see if one of them has a scanner that will pull ABS codes. 10:1 it's the rear speed sensor, they fail all the time. In the meantime you don't have a specific safety issue due to non-functioning ABS, you just have regular non ABS brakes.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

New twist, I thought this morning I would just take it in and get the Les Schwab free brake inspection to see if they could pin down the issue for me. Of course the lights didnt light up for them at all and after the inspection they did not see any issues at all.

Have you topped off the brake fluid since this started? If so that may have been all it was, if the BRAKE warning light is on the ABS will be non-functional.
