What is the name of this fish?
« on: September 14, 2014, 08:18:00 PM »
Went down to the Columbia river to do some spinner fishing and caught a 5 inch fish that i have no idea what it is. I didn't have my camera with me so i'll just have to explain what it looks like.
Looked almost like a young shad, but its fins were clear with tiny black spots on them.
The belly had some orange color.
The eye was large(obviously this was a young fish)and had an orange/red color.
And the fish had a small mouth.

its not round and long like a pikeminnow,  and its mouth isn't the same shape/size as one either.

Do a google image search for fish species of the columbia river.  You might have some luck there.

How can one look like a Shad but have a small mouth.  Trying to think of shad looking fish that have spots, are red and orange looking and get as big as 5".  Man, I have no idea without a picture.  Here are five fish I can think of that might/may/possibly/could happen be thought of as shad like.  Perhaps you could narrow the description down a little from these Columbia river species :dunno:

Redside Shiner
Peamouth
Speckled Dace
Chub minnow
Sand Roller
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Did it look like this? This is a speckled dace, I have some in an aquarium for cleaning off hair algae on plants. They love it! There are some in the pond that we irrigate the lawn with. A farmer stocked them in there years ago.

Nope, would be cool to catch one though!
It looked like a young shad to me, but didn't have that black spot behind me.

Looks like what he described to me!  I had ruled that out because I thought they were shaped more like a Pike Minnow.  But that picture clearly shows a different look than I was thinking they were.

Yep,  looks like what was described.

BTW - great thread.  Love this kind of topic to get me scratching my head.
