New to manashtash unit
« on: September 19, 2014, 04:28:58 PM »
I haven't hunted this unit before I've been on west side for years to many people there. I know there are people in lt Murray , manashtash also just wondering if any one would be willing to help a new hunter to the unit I have no special permit this year I'm the kind of guy that helps others out with their pack out just to be helpful not requiring anything in return I've Been with rmef for 10 years  I love elk hunting been doing since I was 12!!!! I have a tear in my tendon on right foot  surgery is next month but that won't stop me :) a cordazone shot and wrapping it up tight will do the trick  :IBCOOL:  . People do call me nuts for going but I love it !!! Anyone  have any tips and spots on where is good area in that unit for spikes  also I'm not the kind of guys that shoots his mouth off if u know what I mean. Thanks for any help greatly apreciated. Also I'm wiling to walk and get away from people too if needs be this is a request for general rifle season thanks

There is no good area for spikes. They are where you find them. It took me years to learn where to get into elk every time I go out in that unit. I think your first few years need to be spent building some sweat equity in your boots.  :sry: but you can come across elk anywhere in that unit, just a matter if you're hunting pressured elk on the move, or elk that don't get disturbed for obvious reasons.

Get a 340 map and make the trip over this weekend. Scouting pays off. Get off the roads. Hope your vehicle has good tires too

Good luck:tup:

Have you looked at the game department hunter days per kill?   Not good  :bdid:

I hunt this during archery. Many people camp at the manashtash Orv area and riders camp.  You will have to see where people are hunting.. Where I go, I'm not sure your foot will like it, but I'll tell you anyway.  Below taneum lake, many refer to it as the hell hole, but that's where they go bc nobody else wants to.  From there you just have to decide by what you see.  Typically the lower flats back towards the Orv are packed, but that's archery too.
