Yet Another Advice Post
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:23:43 PM »
I apologize for yet another post asking for advice. I am somewhat new to the area as I came back from a deployment last summer and did not hunt at all last fall, this year I am looking to hunt Deer and hopefully Elk (Western side) both modern firearm.
I'm stationed at JBLM and live in the Lacey area, and am interested in any kind of advice for areas to scout and hunt. I'm not looking for anybody's hole, and will be putting in the effort to scout, but I was looking for more sepcific areas around the Western side of the state. I've looked into hunting on JBLM, but the high number of hunters makes me less inclined. I've also done a litttle map recon of some of the GMU's around the Olympics, but I'm unfamiliar with the area and would need a little advice or direction before I just pick a random one and start driving. So any information or advice on places to start would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, sorry for another somewhat vague ask for help, but I figured I'd pick your brains and give it a try.

If I didn't have a location picked out to hunt this late in the year, I would buy a Weyerhaeuser St. Helens access permit for $150. That will give you access to four GMU's- Winston, Coweeman, Toutle, and Margaret. The latter two units do not have a general season for elk, so for elk you'd be limited to either Coweeman or Winston. But both units have good numbers of elk. A lot less than in the past, but still just about as good, or better, than anywhere else. You can hunt deer in all four units. That's what I would recommend for your situation.

Deer numbers are pretty low on Ft Lewis. I have spent some time there and usually run into coyotes... Haven't had much luck when hunting yotes though...
