Hawaii fishing charter?

This is for maui in particular.  Never been here before, going with the wife and inlaws this coming March.  I want to do some fishing while I am there since I might not ever go back again. 

Is there any particular charter that anyone recommends?  Trying to keep it reasonably priced per person ($150-$300) for the day. There will most likely be 4 of us going out.  I am not to particular about what I catch, just want to tie into something that I may never get a chance at again.  Mahi Mahi might be cool if that were possible though.

Also I am having trouble figuring out what kind of license/permit that we may need in order to legally fish down there.

Don't believe they require licensing when fishing with a guide in Hawaii.

I went with a charter on Kauai in August and no license was needed. Results of the trip. I did not catch the blue marlin unfortunately.

if hunting is an option check out pat fisher of hawaii safari's. we did a wild boar hunt on maui for $400 per pig. family had a great time.

There are a lot of boats in Lahaina Harbor and many good ones.  I go out on the Die Hard when I am there.  It costs around $200-225 per person if I remember correctly.  Boat leaves any time between midnight and 3am so youre out fishing the buoys at daylight.  Not sure if thats for you and your group or not but I like it because it puts you fishing at first light which is when we seem to have caught the most fish.  You will fish the buoys for a couple hours and then troll back to the harbor with gear.  Back early enough to still do something in the afternoon if you want.  They are fisherman and are serious about it, so if youre just out for a booze cruise there are other boats around. 

Also consider and talk with your group and the boat about seasickness.  Unless you stay inside the shelter of Lanai and Kahoolawe on southern Maui, it could get pretty rough.  I have been out a few times and its never been calm once you get beyond the shelter of the surrounding islands.

The deal with the boats there is that they keep the fish that are caught, but they will share enough for you and your group to eat for a couple of meals.  They have always been generous with sharing and never felt like I didnt get enough to satisfy me.

Extreme fishing Maui... "No Problem" is THE boat. Been fishing with them there times and every time we're one of the only boats coming back with a full BIG cooler. Caught a 100lbs yellow fin on light tackle with them in 2011. $200 for the charter for 8hrs, tip them well if you have a good experience and you get fish to take back to your condo.

The fish belong to the boat in Maui... They sell it to restaurants. A fishing trip is the cheapest entertainment per hour on the island bar none. Enjoy!

Went with these guys a couple years ago and had one of the best trips I've ever had.  They leave much earlier than other boats so they are fishing at first light, but since we are ahead of them in time it didn't matter.  The captain and the crew were all great guys and the fishing with bait was unreal.  We fished for Tuna and had fish on nonstop for over three hours.  I asked them how that day of fishing was compared to others and they said that we had caught more fish that day than most would in a week.  They were more than willing to give us some fish to take back and cook ourselfs as well as a few awesome recipies.  Have fun.
