Upgrading my Choke Tube
«
on:
September 09, 2014, 04:59:19 PM »
So the past 2 years ive just been using my standard IC that came with my Benelli Nova. I usually do not have a problem dropping a goose or duck on my first and second shot but my 3rd shot I might as well not shoot, my percentage is terrible. So that being said, I feel like maybe upgrading to a mid-range/modified choke might do the trick for me. Any advice would be great, whether it be on brands or even a different choke style.

I shoot the factory modified in my benelli m2 and it kills them just fine.

I upgraded to a kicks high flyer mod. Seems to pattern great and does the work. A standard modified choke that comes with your gun will do go as well. If I am shooting a little further shots I also have a Kicks high flyer full I carry with me.

I moved to in imroved modified for my shooting needs. I just let the patterning board dictate what choke I selected. Patternmaster works well at distance as well for me.

Maybe it isn't the choke tube and maybe it is the shot selection. I know personally with a pump sometimes the 3rd shot is too far to justify for me. If your shooting spot on with the 1st and 2nd shot then it sounds like your current choke is doing a pretty good job. That being said I shoot Carlson choke tubes out of my 870 and like them.

Yea my current stock choke is an Improved Cylinder. Ive been doing some research and im leaning towards the Carlson Black cloud Modified/mid-range choke.

Put a Patternmaster choke in your gun and you're done. tight patterns and a super short shot string means lots more pellets on target. Quicker kills. Less cripples.

Are your hunting fields, over water? Early in the season, the local geese decoy pretty good, later in the season ya gotta reach out a bit farther. Early in the season, using too tight a choke when the geese in your face just destroys meat. I use BB all season long and change chokes to match how the birds are decoying. The Optima chokes in my spaggetti gun actually pattern pretty well with the shells I'm using.

All my guns like different tubes. My 935, like a pure gold mod. The 835, like a briley light mod. The Versa Max loves a pattern master and will shoot a kicks ok too.
All that being said most people miss on their third shots. I don't normally take my third shot on ducks. Geese are so slow to get up and out a third can be useful.

Switch guns. Shoot one with two barrels and your shot to kill ratio will improve 33%.
Birds flying away and at distance don't provide much of a target. That third round may be best saved for swatting cripples.

BS! the third shell in your gun is for shooting a third duck. Stand up... 1, 2, 3. 3 ducks on the water.
