Knight Ultra Lite..... Need help

Got my new Knight Ultra Lite and really like it, shot it today, and had a good session, but when I cleaned it this afternoon I can't get it to fire now. It appears the firing pin/striker is not reaching the cap. I disassembled and reassembled according to directions, but now not working... Can't figure out what I did wrong, any suggestions would be appreciated.... I am familiar with Black powder cleaning, but this is my first Knight.....

Try turning the knurled knob on the back of the bolt. It's an additional safety. If you don't have it all the way out, the firing pin won't reach the cap.

The issue is most likely a breech plug that is not the correct length. I had that issue with my Ultralite.

We're you able to fire yours, then had issues? Or issues before ever getting it to fire?
Mine worked great today, then after disassembling I have the issue...

That's why I didn't say anything about the breech plug length, because it fired perfectly earlier in the day. Did you check to see if the bolt safety was backed off all the way yet?

I assume you removed the firing pin when cleaning by tightening the secondary safety until it stopped, and then unscrewing it. When you turned the secondary safety in after disassembly, how far in did you turn it?

I turned it in until it stopped, aligned the parts, backed off secondary safety part turn until it was tight enough to hold parts in place, installed and then backed secondary safety completely out.... But doesn't look like striker is hitting/reaching out of bolt body...

Getting to the discussion a bit late... Been in Spokane all weekend baking in the sun watching the granddaughters play FP softball...

When I read this my first thought was the secondary safety was/is not screwed out to the stop, but someone else already brought that one up...

The odd part was that it worked great in the beginning.  So my next question might be, when you got the rifle new did you clean the rifle before shooting? In that cleaning did you remove the breech plug and re-install it?  If you did do you remember if you installed it until it was snug? In the initial cleaning did you take apart your bolt assembly? probably not but need to ask..

OK.. so at the point you are at now, when you open the bolt to re-cock the rifle close the bolt and pull the trigger - I assume the hammer moves forward - two things to look at... 1) how far way from the rear of the bolt shroud is the secondary safety thumb screw? The secondary safety should almost be touching the face of the shroud and there should only be one or two threads of the hammer visible.

It should look something like this...



Then if you look in the side of the rifle where the hammer and nipple are you should see the hammer extended out the face of the bolt.  This picture shows the correct amount of extension...



If all of that is correct the hammer should be very close to the top of the nipple post, not quite touching it but very close.  There should be a space less than the thickness of a piece of printer paper.

One other question and I assume the answer is 'no' - but you have not changed the nipple? You are still using the factory Knight nipple correct?  Speaking of that which nipple are you using - the Musket or #11?  I really do not like the Musket nipple but I know other do.  To compound that problem there are two types of Musket nipples, one with a straight post and one with an off-set post.  If you are using the musket nipple which one is yours?

Have not talked about taking the bolt apart and re-assembling it at this point but that may be the next thing assuming that you took the bolt apart to clean it also.

My wife's was doing something similar, the distance between the firing pin and nipple was different each time I cycled the bolt and the bolt was very difficult to cycle.. When I contacted Knight, they had me send in the bolt and breech plug. That was 3 weeks ago, I just talked to them this morning and he's fixing the bolt and measuring the breech plug to make sure it's the correct size. Sucks that ML season starts Saturday! Now trying to figure out what she's going to be hunting with.

I was having the same problem with my new ultralight sabot loader had me check measurement of breech plug always in spec figured out that you can tighten the bolt too much when you put it back together screw the firing pin assembly into the bowl handle all the way then back it out one full turn then aline it's a flaw in the design they did not know they have I also switched to a Thompson Center flamethrower musket nipple it's .020 longer than the knight nipples I now get perfect ignition for up to 50 shots without worrying

And after a lot of range work the load I came up with for mine that shoots sub 1 inch groups with the scope at 100 yards is a 285 grain Barnes MC bullet on top of 3-50 grain 777 pellets 2087 fps avg this is not a combination that I would've never shot before and I've never been a pellet Shooter but looking at chronograph results it's hard to beat the consistency of the pellet at 10 shot sting of only 14 fps deviation
I have absolutely fallen in love with the ultralight but this load does make it kick you like a mule

I have not done a ton of research but as I can tell they only make the flame thrower in a musket I did look locally for number 11 in the flamethrower type configuration but have not measured the difference between a TC and at knight number 11 nipple
When I told Tanner about the firing pin bolt handle issue he went and got one check it out and was amazed that you could over tighten it you would think spring it into tight would make the firing pin stick out farther but it does the opposite

OK... for those of us that have the newer Knights, DISC's, Mountaineers, or the new Ultra Light I would guess we need to introduce a new 'Bolt Assembly Rule'

If, when you take your bolt apart to clean or change available options, one of the things that makes the rifles so versatile, then you re-assemble I would suggest following the fallowing options.

1. Make totally sure that the secondary safety is turned in as far as it will go - sometimes this take a hefty twist to get the last little bit.

2. Insert the hammer assembly in the bolt housing and turn it clockwise until it stops turning.

The third step is where it get a bit interesting...

  a. In the older blots and the majority of the bolts you would then rotate the hammer assembly back counter clockwise until the hammer assembly and bolt housing are aligned correctly.  Surface 'A' Should align with surface 'B' and the 'Striker Tip" should align with the 'Detent" at the top of the strike ramp.  With alignment, begin carefully un-screwing the secondary safety until it is completely out.

This picture shows the correct alignment...



Step 'a' is the normal procedure for the bulk of the older Knight Bolts.  But, in some cases it will not work with the newer bolt assemblies.

If you have completed the re-assembly through step 'a' re-insert the bolt in the rifle and if all works great you now a ready to go.  If it does not fire the primer or the cap or the bolt handle is very tight/difficult to close or lift.

then move to step 'b'

  b. remove the Bolt again - reset the secondary safety in to pull the 'striker' out of the detent. Then rotate the Hammer Assembly one full turn counter-clockwise.  Release the secondary safety and re-install the bolt.  The hammer assembly will now operate normally.

I am certainly not the best writer in the world so I hope those that have a Knight understand the procedure.
