ELK??? Advice???
« on: September 24, 2014, 01:29:48 PM »
Not sure where to go.... just looking for someone to point me in right direction not a whole lot of time to scout just had a new baby so time is tight.  not asking for honey hole, trying to fill my tag for modern i can even get archery if someone has private access if need be.   I am military and this is the last year i will have a opportunity for a roosevelt at least for the next 3 years possibly and i deploy in the beginning of 2015.

Have you considered muzzy season? Its fast approaching, but should be a great week to be in the elk woods.

You don't have a Weyerhaeuser pass, so I would suggest units that have National Forest land to hunt, such as 516, 560, and 572.

If you can spend $150, buy the Weyerhaeuser pass and hunt Winston or Coweeman.

You can hunt muzzy season with your bow. Have you bought your elk tag yet?

Well you can come up with us if you want. See about changing your leave dates, your CO will probably understand. We will be going up on the 1st and coming out on the 10th or 11th. Ml elk hunt; spike only im afraid.  :bash:  No guarantee you'll get one but I can guarantee youll be in to 'em. Maybe someone nearby Oak Harbor on here could loan you a muzzy.  :dunno:  Or just hunt your bow.

With the typical success rates are around or under 10% for all general hunts for archery, muzzleloader, and modern rifle, a "pretty much guaranteed" hunt is pretty hard to come by with an over the counter tag in this state.

I typically hunt the Lewis River unit, Modern Firearm. I have been into elk every year, got 3 bulls in 7 years of hunting this unit, two of them in the last two years. The proven way to increase the odds of success is to spend a lot of time out there.

This year I have an antlerless tag in a different area not open to general season so I will not be hunting the Lewis River. If you decide to go on your own I can point you in some general directions and give a few tips that I have learned over the last few years.

"Pretty much guaranteed opportunities" are kind of hard to come by, buddy.

Where are you deploying to?
