Youth Alta Doe tag

My 11 year old son just called me at work saying he got a special tag in the mail for the Alta unit, he's so excited.  He just got certified last season and has a new .308 with an itchy trigger finger.  I've never hunted there and and it was his 4th choice this season since he didn't get drawn at first we never scouted it.  I'm leaving in three weeks for two weeks of elk hunting trying to fill my any bull tag so I don't have time to scout.  We are going to take advantage of the season in November and was wondering if anyone can point us in the right direction to start.  You'll be helping my son try to fill his first tag.

Have to say it and i will,my son shot and killed his first deer at the age of 11 in 1995,my daughter shot hers at the age of 11 in 93. Both were bucks,my sons a spike(legal then) and my daughters was a 2by3. Both my kids have been braught up to shoot the deer with "horns"then it was changed to make sure they have 3 points,both have had opps and even drew doe tags which were burned in the cerimonial fire as they have been since the beginning of doe shoots,we have been drawn many times and each tag has been burned....drive in and shoot a doe-shame on you jason!....

Wouldn't it be great if everyone was allowed to make their own choices about what to do with these tags, instead of being told that they are bad people if they choose to use the tags.

So you're applying for doe tags only to burn them? Shame on you for taking those opportunities away from someone who really wants them.

What you stated was really BW (before wolves).We tried to let the mule deer have every chance to build up but that is now obviously not our game departments focus with encouraging all the predators #"s to be maximizes. You want to make sure you kill every deer you are legally entitled to because the cars,bears,wolves and cougars will be getting those deer to the point that we won't be able to hunt within 10 years.So sorry for the grandkids but that is going to be the reality of the situation.There will be draw only in eastern washington,just like e.oregon but hey,enjoyed it while the deer were here.

Congrats on burning your doe tags. That's great deer herd management    Myself, I was brought up a meet hunter, and will kill a doe in a minute, and brought up my daughters the same way.

Make sure you are on public ground (not private).  Finding a doe should be easy.  I hope to see pics of your son and his doe!!

I started hunting the Methow in the early 1970's with my family who had been hunting over there for decades,  and they had doe burning permit fires, some have owned property.  I remember seeing alot of deer, does, and that was part of the count around the fire at nights seen 50 deer 5 bucks etc. Then I was gone for 20 years came back, and now it's I saw 5 deer, all does and I enjoyed seeing them. I feel bad for the kids that won't see these does, and have a story to tell around the fire in years to come.

Why don't you just not apply for them? You're doing the same thing that anti-hunters and PETA folks do to prevent hunters who want the permits from getting them. Real nice of you.

Jack you probably never seen the mass amounts of deer over there, and yes it is nice to see the kids get their first deer no matter what it is, but this is not the year to do it. And to see a 45 year guy get a doe during modern not my cup of tea. Let the heard rebound.

Why don't you just not apply for them? You're doing the same thing that anti-hunters and PETA folks do to prevent hunters who want the permits from getting them. Real nice of you.

 I haven't hunted that unit but I hope someone on this site will send you a message about where to get started so your boy will be successful.

Both of my kids killed does for there first deer and I couldn't be prouder of them, both of them are and will be lifetime hunters and are not tainted by the "horns only" mentality of some.....
