Gambling Guy thanks I agree with you  never eaten antlers but if I did I bet their hard on your teeth.  My son will be happy and i'ld rather have him shot a doe as part of game management then to see it get hit by a car and die on the side of the highway and or starve this winter. But I guess there's smart people on here who know how to manage the deer and everything else that the state is obviously doing wrong .

And to you top notch "shame on you for shooting a doe"  please don't comment on my question because I don't recall asking you if it was ok to shot a doe and I could careless if you think it's ok.

Looks like I'll just drive in the unit and shot and have my son shot his doe.

Have to say it and i will,my son shot and killed his first deer at the age of 11 in 1995,my daughter shot hers at the age of 11 in 93. Both were bucks,my sons a spike(legal then) and my daughters was a 2by3. Both my kids have been braught up to shoot the deer with "horns"then it was changed to make sure they have 3 points,both have had opps and even drew doe tags which were burned in the cerimonial fire as they have been since the beginning of doe shoots,we have been drawn many times and each tag has been burned....drive in and shoot a doe-shame on you jason!....

So you're applying for doe tags only to burn them? Shame on you for taking those opportunities away from someone who really wants them.

Why don't you just not apply for them? You're doing the same thing that anti-hunters and PETA folks do to prevent hunters who want the permits from getting them. Real nice of you.

Jackelope, I was stating a tradition,no one in our family has ever shot a doe. We always put in for tags when offered and if we are drawn we burn them.We like to think we are doing the right  thing. To us, we are doing the right thing by saving a doe which could drop many fawns for the future.The statement made of "Drive into the unit and shoot the doe" sounded very disrespectful in my book! I have donated and given many,many deer to needy familys that NEED not WANT one as you said. Needing a deer and wanting one are two different things.You dont know me,I,m about as far to the other direction as you can get from an anti-hunter or a PETA person.With all do respect...

 I haven't hunted that unit but I hope someone on this site will send you a message about where to get started so your boy will be successful.

Both of my kids killed does for there first deer and I couldn't be prouder of them, both of them are and will be lifetime hunters and are not tainted by the "horns only" mentality of some.....

Thank you Gamblin guy,I will do my best to censored .And like you are proud of your kids for shooting does,I am proud of mine for shooting bucks.A difference in opinions and beliefs,thats all.And i hope someone does PM me to help me out on where and how to get started.....By the way,no ivory towers or horn hunters here,been hunting for 51 years and have never had a deer scored,couldnt even begin to tell you how to do it! ...good luck to you also.

Team baze,I meant no disrespect to you or your son,i hope he gets a nice one.My comment was directed towards the statement of "Drive into the unit and shoot one".Just didnt sound right to me,I dont agree with this doe shoot,i am against shooting does at this time in the methow and i am not bashful about it.Whats done is done and there is no changing the situation....Good luck to your son.

In the old system my family did the same thing, applied for doe tags and then tore them up if we got them.  It was our way to demonstrate against what we thought were bad decisions by the WDFW.   In the current system I cant afford to do it, so never have thought about it. 

I wasn't aware they were going to do Alta doe tags.   Interesting since there is quite a bit of winter range available yet in that unit and with the deer population so low compared to normal, the range is not near its max.   
Good luck to your son.   You shouldn't have any problem getting him on a deer.

And so will my kids and there kids if there is still hunting.how dare u put shame on me for being positive for you and your kid.any harvested animal is meat in the freezer keep burning your tags that's just one more deer for my kids to chase.I have a total of four tags this year now I'm motivated to make sure we shoot all does.

just to be clear that was directed to bigmac I hope your son gets his first I have helped many people and qill continue to do so just not rude people if I had time I'd go scout for you its a special moment getting to hunt with your kids.

  I guess someone should tell you something about the Alta and stop jawing about everything and anything but what you asked for,so I'll tell you the little bit I know that might help you.Look on http://apps.wdfw.wa.gov/gohunt/app.html?theme=bigGame and look at 242.I have been in at War Creek,Poorman Creek  and buttermilk butte road and its real easy to find those does.Picking one out that has some size and not with fawns isn't such an easy thing.I took a few does and sometimes it was a real challenge to get a dry one,if you know what I mean. Get a grunt tube for whitetail and be in cammo.Be up above a  running creek or the twisp river at the end of the road,Gilbert Mine, about 3 hours before light and set.The herds of does will be coming off the water and when you see them,blow that grunt tube a couple times.The young ones that are yearlings or a little older will come to find out what the heck was making that racket.Easy bow range but watch out for the young bucks as they might be tagging along.I once had a forkhorn blow snot in my face from inches.I was in paint shadowing a herd of 20 does for a couple hours as they went uphill and this little raghorn came across a deadfall from my blindside,landing right next to me.I froze but he sure didn't like the way I smelled.If your kids are too young to hike or get deer jitters you can drive up Poormans Creek rd to Black Pine Lake area and drive those roads as they switchback in every direction.You can get there by going up Buttermilk Butte road,too. Have a good map or copy the GOHUNT map and fill up before going out there as its a long way from nowhere.I usually carry a 5gal can, too.I have every confidence you will see deer.If you get back by Gilbert down along the river you will see some whitetails,too.I have whacked a couple that were pretty darned big,too.Most were in the Gardner side but they like it brushy and that hugh,old burn on the Alta side has some great habitat for whitetails now as it burned over 20 years ago.
