String break on Hoyt
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:48:21 PM »
I have a 2013 Hoyt Charger.  I have shot it some but it is not like I'm out shooting arrows every night.  This weekend I was pulling back the string with my release and the string broke under tension.  At first I couldn't figure out what just happened.  The string broke right down near a cam and where the string is covered by a black winding.  There was a slight amount of wear near the D loop but I don't think very much.  Anyone experiencing similar things?

Might just have been a defect with the string if there wasn't any noticeable fraying. Your bow show should be able to get you up in no time.

Does it get stored in the garage in the off season/summer?  I had 2 hanging on the garage wall this summer break strings from the excessive heat, I believe.  Granted, the strings were a couple of years old.

I have stored the bow indoors and in a soft case when I haven't used it.  I always worried that if a string broke that it might be at the loop area where the string shows some light wear but not near the end.  I'm wondering how much a new string is going to run?

Oooo, that's in a different area than I thought you were saying in the PM.  That is an odd location!  Not sure I have ever seen one go there that was not derailed!  That's goofy!  You should go out and buy a Powerball ticket :chuckle:

Can get a custom one built for about $30 @ Rock Creek Archery in Enumclaw.  Factory, I would think would be a little less.

Hey guys, that's less than I expected.  Maybe I will have enough left to get that powerball ticket.   :chuckle:

Be sure to check your limbs very carefully for cracking if it broke while you were at full draw.  I had a cable let loose once,  :yike:   luckily everything exploded forward and not into my face.  However, later in the season, I noticed cracks in both limbs at the axle notch.  Maybe not as much of an issue with the split limbs.  I still managed to get my first all-by-myself bull that year, but I quit target shooting for that season.

$30 for a custom string? Holy cow!!! Thats cheap. Does that include install and tuning?
Is that the entire set? Or just the shooting string? If just string that sounds a bit more reasonable.

String only, not installed, and he had it done in a day.  I had a set of cables, yokes and a string done this spring and it was right at $110.  I do all my own bow work so I don't know what he charges for tuning or install.

That should be just about right for hand built string, two cables, tune and installation of peep and D-Loop!  I've seen it maybe +/- $20 depending on shop and custom options.  Getting someone to make a full custom string this time of year can be difficult though.

I know you can get it done at Riverside Archery In Mt Vernon.  :twocents:

The Nock Point did a great job putting a new string on for me.  Great customer service.
