Nitro grappler or cooper sst tires?
« on: October 01, 2014, 07:47:31 AM »
Going to put one of these on my 06 lifted duramax, which of the two? Opinions wanted, thanks. 35x12.5x20 discount has the coopers for 319 a tire, nitro is 40 more.

Can't comment on the Nitto's but I do know the Coopers are quite a bit noisier than Toyo's. I have heard many times of loggers trying the Coopers for the price savings and  returning them for Toyo's.

they want a fortune at les Shwab for the toyo's, I have the nitto mud grappler now and nothing is more noisy than those!  My friend also logs and loves those toyo's, but around 440 a tire!😳

Nitto and Toyo are made by the same company. Nitto's are a great, underrated tire if you ask me.

toyos are the way to go i love those tires, great in mud or ice, quite on the street, dont wear out to fast, had 37s on my 250 powerstroke 4 door long bed for a year and still had 75% tread, kinda pricey though... nittos are pretty noisy but are a great tire, same as the toyo but just noisy

the coopers i would not buy, had them on my toyota and now my dad has them on his, wear horribly and cup really bad, not that great in snow or ice, pack full of mud if it gets sticky, very noisy and horrible ride when worn in a little

maybe look at the bfg km2 good price and a great tire, rides smooth and they arent as heavy as the toyo or cooper

It sounds like you guys don't cooper, toyo's are just too damn expensive. Might have to go with nitto.

They are expensive for a reason, they last.

20" rims make for an expensive tire no matter what.

I had KM2's on my 2012 Tacoma I liked them but never could get them balanced properly and they were noisier then my 35 12.50 20 Toyo's on my 2500 Cummins. I just checked out the LT325/60R20 KM2 on Tire rack $507.00 ea!!!!!!!!!!  :yike:

I've never seen good results from Toyo Open Country Mud Terrain tires on the bigger trucks. Simple human nature shows that people don't maintain their tires/vehicles as they should. On those heavier trucks, when those tires aren't rotated like mad, they cup really bad. I've seen it dozens of times. Not nearly as bad on the half ton trucks.
Again, just my .02 seeing these trucks day in and day out for the last I forgot how many years.

I run those on some of our fleet trucks,  weve been pretty happy with them.  They don't look half bad either

I'm on my second set and never had any issues at all.  Both trucks were 2500 cummins with 35" tires.
I do however rotate them at every oil change, (5000 mile)

As mentioned, the biggest issue with the Toyo MT's is the being diligent on rotates.  The other issue is running the proper pressure.  I don't care what you are hauling, you don't need 65PSI in them.  Period.  They will round out so damn fast.  3/4 ton rig should be running upper 40's.

I'm putting a set of AT2's on my truck this Saturday.  I've heard nothing but good about them so far.  Got a few friends that run them.  Here 's a link to Toyo's tire selection and the different tire ratings.

I have had the nitto trail grapplers on my tundra for 3 years now.  So far have been very happy with them.  They are louder than some of the others but I paid less than $1000 for them mounted and balanced.  I have about 30,000 miles on them and I think I am around 65% tread left.  They are basically a 33" 11.5 tire I think so for that price I couldn't pass them up..

it did spend a couple months in the shop though...6.blow powerstroke  :chuckle: :bash:

 :yeah:

65 is max pressure if I'm not mistaken.  I run mine at 50 as recommended by a buddy who I really trust with tire knowledge.

I have the nitto's on my 95 dodge 2500 12v they've been great.   Not sure the mileage but they're holding up very well.  They don't sidewall flex with a heavy camper on either.
My mileage did go down when I switched from a tall skinny tire to the bigger Nitto,  from 20-21 to 17-18 MPG.   I need to find a set of new rims and snow tires.

very little road noise, I've had some tires that even drown out my loud azzed truck - makes for a long day road tripping.

The nitto's are roughly 32x12x17 and almost rub in the wheel wells.  I need stiffer front springs with the big bumper and winch hanging off the front  :chuckle:

They really, really suck in the snow though FYI  even siped and brand new.

It sounds like you guys don't cooper, toyo's are just too damn expensive. Might have to go with nitto.

Toyos are expensive, and DURABLE, fellow i know runs a LS store...they see a damaged Toyo MT maybe once a year...and they sell them by the truckload.  I have a very worn set on my FS Chevy, need to replace them..but they outperform all the other MT type tires I have had on 3 different trucks.  I'll suck it up and pay for the Toyos MTs

One DOES have to pay attention and rotate/check balance.  OTOH I'm the guy with 236K on one truck, 177K on another and am running a third with 196K on it...the first two i put most all the miles on them, the third I bought from a board member, in really good shape and have proceeded to run the stuffings out of it hauling wood and trailers.and it keeps on going.  If you look at my tires, they are wearing flat and true with just a bit of taper on the fronts on both inner and outer edges...which is why they go to the back to get flattened out again.

Where are you buying from? If the place has the cooper st maxx I suggest you take a look at them. They have a hybrid at/mt design and once you feel the beefiness of the 3 ply sidewall you will be sold. They are super tough and no rocky road is a worry with those tires. Not that loud on the highway, they are very heavy tires though so mileage may suffer a little.

Well the toyo mt's are 467.00 a piece, the reviews I've heard and seen for the open country at2's are pretty good.  And at 366.00 a piece, I will go with the open country tires this time, even though I think the toyo's are better.  Just too much when I have my Idaho elk tag to buy!! Got to have your prioritys !  :chuckle: thanks , you guys are great for helping out.

I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers (LT295/70R18) on my Tundra. Basically a 35x12x18 and they work great. Nice and quiet and work great in mud, snow, and rain. They don't fair to well on ice though. Got them for well under a $1000 and got Discount Tires to price match an ad I brought in. I ran Mickey Thompson ATZs before that and really liked that tire.

:yeah: 3rd set on 3 different vehicles and have not had any issues. I've wanted to try the nitro mud grapplers  but I keep going back to the stt's.
My only complaint with the Nitto Mt's are the noise, I have gotten great mileage out of them, over 50,000 so far believe it or not.  But the noise they give me is insane! The noise is my only complaint with the MT's, they kick butt in the snow as well as getting great miles out of them.

Same size and truck I have. How many miles have you got out of yours so far?

www.discounttiresonline.com will beat the pants off of any Schwabs pricing, if they carry the same brands. That's who I buy my tires from.

I don't understand the affinity there is for Schwab.  Shop around, there are a lot better prices out there if you compare apples to apples.  Service at most places is comparable too.  Costco, Walmart, Sears, Discount, and even smaller shops will beet the tar out of Schwab's prices.

I have 35x12.5x17 STT's on my Powerstroke.  I like the traction and road noise is fine for a mud tire.  I do think the BFG's I have run in the past seemed to last longer though, with great traction.  There were no BFG Mud Terrains available the last time I needed tires for the truck, so went STT.  All the sets of BFG's I have run have made 70K miles (4 sets on two rigs) and still had usable tread on them.  Again, 5k mile rotation.  I will go back to BFG's on the Stroke the next time I need tires.   :twocents:
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I wish I could put bfg's on but they said they don't come in my size.  I like discount tire much better but I hate the bank they use for financing, they always send my bill late so I'm late paying.  If your late twice the damn interest rate goes way up, I won't mess with them anymore.

I go to Schwab for the service.  We put new tires on my wifes Audi Quattro a couple years back from there.  After 1 year they were toasted. Not the tires fault, Audi's just rub when you turn at high speed, that's the way they were designed (stupid I know).  Took the car in to get new tires and the guy at Schwab said they wont put that brand on Audi's, the don't work, and said it was their mistake.  So we got 4 new toyo's for FREE.  I never complained or asked for anything, they just saw their mistake and made it right.   I will continue to be a loyal customer, price isn't everything to me.

I have Nitto Terra Grapplers on my silverado 1500.  Very comparable to the Toyo AT for less money. I would get them again.

coop I would say that I am around 30 to 40,000. I put the tires on in late 2010 and drove it daily until I bought my 4Runner in April of 2013. My son drives it now, so I haven't paid to much attention to the mileage on it.

I dont know if you already have 20 inch rims or if a 16.5" wheel will fit over your brakes but.... The used Goodyear Humer tires  wear like iron on big trucks and are some of the best bang for the buck out there. My Brother ran them on his crew cab F350 long box while he was logging (really sad weather cracked ones) and he only had one blow out, he thought due to the lower tread and sharp rocks. They can be had fairly reasonably Less than $125 each ususally for pretty decent stuff. Not the best wheeling tire but a really good 70-30% tire that sees lots of pavement. I had a set posted on here that i sold recently.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.
