Muzzleloader
« on: October 01, 2014, 07:01:40 PM »
I have muzzle load hunted off and on since a kid.  I picked up the new in-line muzzleloader and shot it 15 times last week.  I broke it down like I would with my other muzzle stuffers.  I did not use boiling water as I was using Pyrodex.  I cleaned the bore until clean with no. 13 bore cleaner.  I did not run a light oil or bore butter like I typically would.  Took a look down the bore today and the bore looked like a science project.  Never seen so much rust in a bore.  I thought Pyrodex was supposed to be less corrosive than traditional black powder.  Any thought on this?

I just cleaned it again.  This time I ran bore butter down it.  It looks a ton better, but is a disappointment as it is brand new.  I have had a dozen plus smoke poles and never experienced this before.  Going back to the boiling bucket of water from here on out.

no pyrodex is just as corrosive as black powder.

Clean it with warm soapy water, dry patch it, run 2 patches dampened with Alcohol and then dry patch again. The alcohol removes any moisture left in the bore.

DUMP bore butter! The stuff is rookie junk.

Barricade or RIG #2 are much better performers at keeping rust away.

I have a Vortek. I clean it until the bore looks good then my last step is to use the Knight anti rust spray on a patch and thoroughly run it through the bore. I also use it on the outside of the barrel. Before I shoot again I thoroughly swab the barrel out with a windex  patch and dry patches. Always works for me. Good luck.
Fish hard, hunt harder!
